Fatbastard
Hit the island yesterday on a charter boat and joined the other 50+ boats at the north end of the island. Livies were very shy and we tried for around an hour to only come up with maybe 10 yakkas and a couple of slimies. So the boat in total took about 20 kings not one legal fish among them. I got close with a 60 something. Good fun but a bit disappointing as I am yet to break my duck on a legal king (next week hopefully) As I was on a charter they were only set up for bottom bashing (paternoster) and so caught the inevitable 20 rock cod, small flatties, a gurnard etc. The pros were dragging them in just opposite us on jigs as were most of the other boats and I saw a couple of very nice fish come up while we were amongs the flotilla. Have never seen so many boats in one spot!!! So once again it was the case of "you should have been here yesterday" but a nice day on the water just the same. big Neil
Hope you manage to get among them Fb. It's a wonder that they're not totally spooked with all the attention that they're getting. Anyway keep us all posted, sure that you'll crack a legal one soon mate. Good luck, bn
frankS
I have seen the Nor/east corner busier than that and when it's like that I troll up and down the east side of the island and stay away from the crowds, OR fish Anguish rock ( spelling ) south of the island. I realise you couldn't pick the spots being on a charter but IF you have your own boat it works. Frank
wazatherfisherman
We used to jig the N/E corner and live bait where you were (foul ground/foul yard reef) or as Frank said Anguish to the south. Most of the big ones were at foul ground and 2-6 kg versions at N/E corner.

I was out there also, never bother with livebaits and mostly fished with small jigs in the 80-100g. Personaly I think the way all those boats follow each other about is why they don't have the greatest success on bigger fish. Very few seem to use there electronics to find the quality fish, perhaps simply because many tourists are happy to just catch small fish and charter operators loose less gear. We had constant hook ups of fish 85+ for the entire morning without loosing a single fish to seals. After my daughter had finished working on the charter boat in the morning I ventured back out for another afternoon session, where once again we had a constant double hookup of catch and release. Unfortunately the sharks clocked onto us and landing any fish at all became almost impossible by late afternoon.
