LONG REEF BEACH

I don’t know if the beach is in the reserve but “hand held line fishing” includes a rod and line held in the hand, i.e. no shooting fish with pointy things and you can’t leave the rod siting in a holder or unattended. Does that help?

Have a look at this link @quintrex

https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/marine-protected-areas/aquatic-reserves/long-reef-aquatic-reserve_old

Heres a quote

"The reserve is an important site for educational activities and scientific research and is a popular site for school groups, university students and marine researchers.

Finfish (fish with a backbone) can be taken by hand held line or spear only, subject to other NSW fishing rules and regulations.

No invertebrate animals, cunjevoi or marine plants (whether alive or dead) can be taken or collected from this reserve. This means that you cannot collect shellfish, fish for squid or cuttlefish, collect any marine animals or plants from the shore, or collect empty shells. The removal of dead plants or animals is not permitted as they provide habitat and/or food for living organisms. Bait cannot be collected in the aquatic reserve.

Other than finfish, no marine plants or animals can be harmed in the aquatic reserve."

Hope this helps

I read in the Pittwater Life magazine that recently groups of people have been coming in from outside the northern beaches and removing any shellfish and molluscs that they can find on the rocks and destroying the environment, Long Reef Reserve included. Apparently Council is stepping up ranger patrols. Hopefully some big fines will send the right message.

There you go. Spear is OK, too as indicated. I was just advising that “hand held line” does not mean “handline only”.

Thanks for your comments, guys.  I asked the question concerning Long Reef Beach Aquatic Reserve because it seems to be the only Aquatic Reserve in the Sydney area where "hand held line" is mentioned.
