Whitto
Best I can do is ... Find out how much a 140 Suzuki 4 stroke from site sponsor Yabbie Marine is before you decide. Good luck
jewnut
have to agree with Whitto, even if you sacrifice a bit of horsepower or buy a late model second hand four stroke youd be better off. Or look at direct injected two strokes.
Grantm
To answer the actual question of which is best between the two motors you mentioned, the Yamaha is miles in front. In fact i wouldn't even say the two brands in the same sentance. If you have to choose go the Yamaha.
bisso
from what i understand, mercury basically copy from tohatsu (which are great motors). yamaha are a very popular brand but i think you pay for that privelige. 4 strokes are quieter, more efficient but also a bloody lot heavier. i still prefer two strokes for their holeshot performance. the direct injection 2 strokes are worth looking at.... best advice is ask around, talk to a few boaties and then make up your own mind. you will after all end up with it... Grantm
Just as a point of interest, the weight of an ETEC is not one of their strong points. They are only about 15 kg lighter than a Yamaha 4 stroke in the 115 hp range. My 50 ETEC weighs 109kg compared to the average two stroke of about 80 to 90 kg. They are the best though. There are 195 moving parts in a Yamaha cylinder head, compared to just TWO in an ETEC.
