Yowie
Headed out early this morning. No contact with anyone so Covid safe. Fished Gunnamata Bay from first light, anchored on the edge of the deeper water. Pulled out the trev and tailor on salted mackerel strips, also a 60cm salmon, all on hand lines. The salmon took some time to the net, then released. Bites were slow. After the tide had risen a bit, I headed to Maianbar flats, pumped some nippers and waded about. The water is cold up river. It took some time to hook up the whiting, baits getting chewed by toads and little whiting. The biggest whiting was just past the 41cm mark when landed, shows how much fish shrink in the cold ice water of the esky. Weighed just over the pound and a quarter mark, the smallest a pound even. That was enough for me, so I headed home. At the mouth of Gunnamatta Bay, many birds working the surface so tossed in a metal. Salmon. Moving around very quickly, there one second then gone. Over the hour I pulled out 5, all released, around the 45 to 50 mark. Several times I had salmon following the lure to the boat, head butting each other out of the way, but not taking the lure, just having a look. Some days the salmon are slow and lazy, today, swimming about like rockets.
Isaac Ct
Great haul yowie! You always manage to find some good with the cold weather and dismal conditions.
beachwormer
Quality whiting there. Do you keep the tailor for bait or the table? If the table, what's the best way to cook them?
BigHorse
sounds like a great morning fishing, well done!
zmk1962
Top stuff there Dave. Peaceful Winter estuary fishing and a feed. Can’t beat that especially when it’s within your 10km zone. You’re one lucky fella. I reckon all I’d score in a 10km radius is carp, eels, the occasional duck etc cheers Zoran

There are many ways to cook tailor fillets - BBQ, crumbed and pan fried (better for the smaller ones), a number of different recipes I have found in books and Google, baked with different sauces. I was happy with the size of the whiting. Well, you could plan a few new dishes. Carp Crap - Eel with Slippery Sauce - or Dirty Duck

The biggest one on the handline did not want to give up.

DaveBM
Your hand lining work has me all nostalgic. My PB bream was by hand. In fact I have just now decided to try to handline soft plastics next time it’s dead calm and I’m somewhere suitable. Has anyone done any lure fishing by hand, other than vertical jigging in the deep?
DaveBM
Obviously line maintenance is a huge issue with fine line land based, but I can think of spots it could work

Jigging for squid with home made jigs was always hand line work. When I saved up enough pocket money and bought a rod and reel, it was like fishing royalty (unless there was a tangle on the reel) 🤣 My biggest bream was 3.5 pound on a handline, and a few others not far behind. Pickles
Thanks for report Yowie, great to hear the success of other Raiders at the moment - I can’t really get out except to target Bass, but usually do this in Summer. Some great shots of some good whiting and salmon are always fun to catch.

Some quite prominent Sydney guides use handlines to get their squid. Given the specialist gear at their disposal - Stellas and the like - I think it goes to show that the technique works.
