PeterSmith
Hey Everyone, the other day i went down to cremorne point, and fished around the lighthouse area off the rocks. I was consistently losing my bait but wasnt feeling any bites and frequent snags. I also tried some soft plastics for a bit but had some trouble with toadies nipping off the tail. Anyone have any advice on certain rigs or baits that they have used to fish around here previously. Cheers
noelm
Find a deepish hole with a bit of wash over it, use no sinker, or very little, small bait, light line and a bit of burley, don't cast out as far as you possibly can, early morning or late afternoon, should get a few Bream this time of year. Little_Flatty
Hi Peter, What were you using for bait? For instance if you were using prawns, my first suspicion would be leatherjackets. Keep your hook size small (e.g. size 6 or size 8). Another trick is to use a small float. Google up how to rig one up - there’s many options. If you’re confused about anything, just ask again. When the float goes under, most of the time it is a fish. Also, were you keeping the line reasonably taut? If the line is slack, often you won’t feel bites. That said, if you end up fishing without a sinker or a very light weight as Noel has suggested, it will be hard to keep the line taut. In that case, there is another trick: watch the line in the air/water and if you see it move, then a fish has the bait and you should try tightening up to see if you hook up. Hope this helps. kiwibrown
Hi Peter, Cremorne point is my local, i reckon i've built up a bit of knowledge about that spot. I've fished around the lighthouse a few times and never had any luck whatsoever. There are some way more productive spots around the point on both sides. The side closest to the bridge (sorry hopeless with compass directions) i fish right at the back of the bay off the sand flat. The Manly side try off cremorne wharf or halfway along the rocks between the wharf and lighthouse. Pretty much every harbour species is possible from Cremore point. I use pilchards and chicken as bait generally and have some metals handy too. Also......is there a better spot for a couple of beers and fishing in Sydney? If so i need to see it. Let me know if i can help with anything more specific thanks
leonardgid
it sounds like small chinaman leather jackets usually in schools and once they find a food source they hang around , any time i come across them i usually move , they always hang around close to the rocks so i would use a rod for some long casting to get your bait past them into deeper water . DerekD
Hi Peter, I second that on the small leatherjackets. In the summer when I head out on the kayak, on the fishfinder, I often see a swarm of fish around the section of water adjacent to the lighthouse. They will destroy any squid baits I've got down without a bump on the rod. My theory is that people often burley up around there and you have a school of resident leather jackets. The good thing is that it usually only seems to be the water within say 10 to 15 meters from the lighthouse. If you can get your baits/ures into deeper water the problem should go away (mostly).
