Can someone please enlighten me. What is Burley and under what circumstances do you use it?

Alot in that question but burley is fish scraps guts skin flesh old prawns squid tins of cheap tuna pilchards etc just about anything from the ocean and either munched up in a burley pot on a boat and even cubes of fish sinks down into a trail and fish will come to feed and take a bait you have in the trail. Rocks or beach river same thing minced up stuff weed mixed with sand for black fish and thrown into water but burley is not much good with alot of current anyway good luck.

Burly which the yanks call chum is any food distributed into the water to attract fish towards you to catch them but not in enough quantity to satisfy their food needs.  This can be a complex mix of food bits or as simple as mashed up bread or chopped up weed mixed with sand. Usually its a mix of left overs after cleaning fish but can be as specific as pilchard or tuna cubed and fed into the water in a constant stream.  The general rule is a ĺittle fed out in an unbroken stream.  If you have limited burly it can be a good idea to bulk it up with bread or chook pellets and add some tuna or pilchard oil.

The burly can be distributed from a pot with holes in it or distributed by hand.  There are other ways such as fish frames suspended in a keeper net or even rope tied to the tails of bonito or tuna frames off the rocks. There are heaps of methods depending on how and where you're fishing.   Good luck.   Ron

I say this all the time, to be successful, burley is important...but...just throwing piles of rubbish over the side is not the same as proper use of a decent burly, piles if old fish and so on will attract vermin, but, let's say you are anchored for Snapper and using Pilchards for bait, then, small amounts of cut Pilchard over the side in a steady stream will work 500 times better than a bag of scraps (in my opinion)

One of the most important parts of getting fish started, and keeping them going in my opinion.

I use wheat, half a bucket soaked with boiling water over night, Stir in 2 tins of my special cat food and a dash of tuna oil.

Everything comes up with there guts full of it, Even the next day!

I was berleying a spot one day, The next day a mate of mine pulled up a 52cm bream with his guts full of my mix.

Cheers
