Dollies on at South Sydney FAD

Gday Raiders,

been keeping an eye on the weather for an opportunity to take a run outside. Today was the day - forecast: low wind and low swells.

Headed out to jibbon to get some livies, but wasn’t having any luck - after about 20mins decided to just head out.

The ride out was smooth - perfect conditions. Reached south Sydney FAD around 8am. Strong current hitting the fad but seas nice and flat - & no wind.

water temp 24.5 - blue water

7/0 circle hook on a running sinker rig, with a small sinker to keep the bait down during the drift. Bait was salted bonito strips. Kept the bait between 5-10m deep as I started the drift. First few runs for nothing.

Lined up again, a little closer and hooked up to a 62cm model as I passed.

A few divers were jumping out along the fad - crazy as the current was very strong and they were shot past the fad really quickly.

only 3-4 boats out there at first, then came the larger charter boats until there were around 6 boats on each fad.

took my turn and pulled out another 3 keepers - the 4 fish kept were between 60-70cm. Great fun as they were leaping out of the water.

After a while it starting to get a little crowded - I had enough for a feed so decided to head back. Trolled some skirts on the way in for nothing - put a Christmas tree on while hugging the cliffs for a small bonito.

Beautiful colours on those fish, at least while they're still alive. Should be a few nice feeds in 4 of those. Well done. bn

Love those colours. Some nice fillets for dinner tonight.

One of the most beautiful fish in the ocean, good on the table and a sustainable one to take as well. Well done.

Thanks mate, very pretty fish especially when they just come out of the water.

Nice bag of fish there, dolphinfish I've heard taste amazing but I am yet to have the pleasure of trying one.

Thanks Isaac- Was happy they were of keeper size. Heard a few reports over the last 4 weeks that they were mainly getting small ones with a keeper here and there.

Very nice. A few good feeds there from a sporting fish.

Thanks yowie - they were fun to catch - lots of leaps.

Nice results for your efforts

Pretty big trip in a sea-doo!

Thanks kingie,

took about 40 mins to get out there. Ride was easy going with yesterdays beautiful weather. I have an ocean going jetski (300hp) rigged up to go out. The new hull (ST3) on the ocean seadoos are really stable and grip the water (not like the old school skis) - manoeuvres quick and gets up and down the larger swells with ease.

They look more than capable but Im sure you have to pick your days.

I am curious though about the offshore rules.

I presume you need to follow the general offshore rules for vessels??

I just read the hand manual & couldnt see any rules of offshore but its just out of curiosity.

I saw a guy come through BBay heads when I was out the other week fully rigged up for offshore.

I recon its a great method for fishing but you have to have youth on your side I'd say as it would be pretty physical.

I am about to write up my Thursday trip to the FAD NE of Sydney harbor. Nothing like as good as your trip. 🙂

Hey gordo - bit of luck also helps.
The warm currents are moving all the way down at the moment - warm waters bringing the fish.

Great report and great pics - one of the most spectacular looking “rainbow” fish in the sea - you captured them really well (on both fronts) Well done.

Thanks pickles - love how they raise that blue dorsal and cut through the water.

I totally missed the JetSki bit! Just listened to a doclures podcast on JetSki fishing and while it probably isn’t my thing, it sure sounds fun!

It’s quite popular in NZ and up in QLD. Starting to grow in NSW. They chase tuna, mackerel, wahoo and Marlin on them.

I really enjoy it - easy to launch and versatile - can fish shallow sand flats for whiting or head outside for pelagic fish.

Hey mate, I have found the rules for PWC offshore to be a little vague. The handbook clearly states that you must have a “pwc behaviour” sticker and must always wear a life jacket, but that’s as far as it goes. It only “recommends” that you have the other safety equipment. It may fall under “all powerboats”, but they should list the offshore requirements clearly under pwc.

im a stickler for safety, so have all the safety gear. Epirb on rear of pwc, PLB worn, vhf radio worn, laser flare worn, regular flares,  log in with marine rescue ect ect.

I’m 45, and love the options that pwc fishing give - but when I head outside I do feel it a little the next day - think I might be getting old 😂

My neighbour is 60 and he has one set up for fishing - don’t think he heads out too far though - just to bate bay and boat harbour.

Yeh that's a surprise seeing as the RMS is a stickler for rules & mandatory ruled for boats.

But good on you for taking the initiative, on safety, I couldn't imagine not taking all that gear. Anything can happen including being hit by sealife.

Last time I went out to browns with mates there were that many dolphins flying across in front of us we had to slow right down for fear of being broadsided by one, that aren't small.

There were also whales breaching all over the place to.

I'd imagine there would be people that say nah I don't need that & there's no rules so if I get pulled up they can't do anything. They obviously don't value their life a great deal.

At the end of the day you have to respect the sea & mother nature otherwise it will chew you up & spit you out.

Look forward to hearing more offshore adventures 🙂
