St Georges Basin

Gday Raiders,

A bit of a late report but have been really busy as of late, this was on last Saturday. I headed out onto the Basin with my friends and at the time there was still a lot of freshwater about so we hit the deeper parts of the Basin first anchoring out of the goalposts (the last cardinal markers at the entrance to the basin via Sussex Inlet) in 6m of water and burleyed up to not much except a nice mullet which was kept and a small bream. we then moved over into 6m of water at Sanctuary Point and managed a 33cm bream and a snapper the same size. Was chasing a feed so the came home. Last spot we hit up pelican point as it drops off from about 2.5m to 9m pretty quickly. I was straight onto some nice bream, smallest 32cm and biggest 35cm. A couple of smaller ones and got busted of by a much bigger fish that might have been a tailor, bream or jewie, I really don't know. Wouldn't mind coming face-to face with a Jew in the Basin though. Tide was on its last hours of the run-in and the fish where all caught on peeled prawns on a 1/0 circle hook (barbless) 00 sinker 4lb mono all the way through.

Cheers Isaac

Nice mate, that's a great catch.

Although The Basin Water is coloured up at the moment its quite clear. More like a tannin stain than a dirty fresh and the place is fishing well.

The bust offs you experienced were possibly big tailor. They hit a lure so hard at times in The Basin, the inertia will pop 3kg line with virtually zero drag on the spool.

Thanks mate, we where thinking of planning a evening/night session with live squid to try catch a nice red, Jewie or tailor but no squid😂.

Where are you trying for the squid?

I've found the rocks between Cudmirrah and Berarra Beaches okay. Particularly the north side of the bay where the guys surf.

That's exactly where I go, I have been squidding with others before and they have caught squid. Been trying for almost 3 years now and no luck😂.

Good job Isaac - are they fillets in the corner of the cleaning table?

Yep, but not mine. Some guys went outside and smashed the flatties.
