slothparade
Arrived at Stockton beach at about 6:30 armed with beach worms and pillis. Rigs where size 4 ball sinker and a 2/0 circle hooks and 10 lbs leader. On the other rod, 20 lbs leader with a sliding size 3 star sinker with ganged hooks. On the final rod, a large paddle tail with a 1/2 oz jig head. The target species were salmon and hopefully jewfish. My partner and I drove up north from the William Town entrance searching for gutters.the soft sand with a layer of water underneath made the traveling difficult. Eventually found a gutter pulling directly straight out with 2 large sandbanks either side. The gutter also broke through the sand bank than runs the whole length of the beach, so we though that was a good sign. Had many casts of multiple soft plastics with only one getting a hit without a hook up. So I changed to a metal which instantly got attention from some toothy critters. No hookups but definite tooth marks and hits. Anyways, we decided to relocate, heading south, when my partner decides she's had enough of traveling over the sand and burried her rig to the door sills. After multiple snatches, eventually got her out. Found a large hole with a gutter running across with a sand bank to one side. Started by throwing pillis in and soft plastics bounced off the sand bank and throughout the hole, with no luck. But on the pilli, caught a hair tail, never even knew they could be caught off a beach. Then on after finding a pocket of pippis, My partner tried throwing some of them out on small hooks. Eventually in the surging foam, hooked up. The fish was a very subtle take, but very slow and determined run. After about 10 mins, she brought it up close to the beach before the hook came out. Any help to identify what this could me, it was rather black, like a satin black, and about the thickness of a leg and as round 60-70cm long, but definitely a fish not an eel. Finally to end the day, I landed a nice 33cm bream
