Micro jigs mixed bag and some surprise catch

Recommended Posts

In the last few days I did a bit more micro jigging around Putney and Meadowbank. Gear used is still 1-4kg Abu Veritas & 2500 stradic spooled with PE0.6 + 6/8lbs fluro (jigpara micro & metal addict type 6 in 7-10g). I basically was just targeting flathead because of their availability but got some interesting surprises.

The bream and mullet both bite on the front assist hooks (I only have front assist hooks to avoid snag) which means they really mean it. I did get bream before on jigs but the mullet is really a surprise. It went like a freight train on my ultralight gear, peeling my reel, and jumped like crazy even made me think I hooked on a oz salmon! Such a great fun but I knew it's a rare case we could get them on lure.

Most flatheads I got on jigs is around 40cm - 50cm which put up some decent fight too! I have to say micro jigs really win me over as my go-to approach now. But I promise the next session if the wind is not too crazy, I'll go back to SP for a bit of difference!

Ok you’ve convinced me Henry I’ll start using my micro jigs! No need to change tact if it’s working!

Give it a go mate! Just simply one pitch jerk will do the damage for flathead at least! Hopefully I could unlock Sambo with it this winter.

Morrison bay and Shepherd's bay is my go to places because of the sandy flats and tiny drop-offs

Awesome catches!  Especially the mullet... I have yet to catch one on anything so seeing you catch it on a micro jig makes me even more envious.  Very good size fish, like @Little_Flatty, you've also convinced me 😆  I'm going to try your tip of only having front assist hook to avoid snags - does it reduce hook up rate much in your experience?  Other idea was replacing rear treble with another assist hook

The mullet is a surprising catch to me! They do become weirdly aggressive occasionally from what I saw on YouTube before. I'm more than happy if they could be caught with lure constantly! So much fun!

I think trebles do increase hook rate and possibly catch rate too. But for micro jigs fish generally will gulp it anyway so maybe it won't increase that much. I fish both with w/o trebles and honestly it doesn't really matter imo. And yes I lost the jigpara micro because it snagged with trebles on. A single assist hook at the end def is a good alternative too!

Another thing worth mentioning is that it seems hook out rate when headshake is a tad higher using micro jigs, probably due to the momentum from the jig. So trebles/another assist hook may help with this case! Just don't get too frustrated when you encountered hook out when fishing micro jigging

Oh man I'm a big fan of Larry.  He was one of the first fishing channels I found and followed when I was very new to fishing, and I bought my first jigs (same as his) because of his videos.

I just ordered like 6 micro jigs online now after seeing your post.  Once they arrive and I spend some sessions using them, hopefully I'll have some successes to report back 🤞
