just back it imo. If you hooked on sth that could empty your reel, it's all about luck anyway:1punk:longer lines won't help in that case

If you’re using a spin reel and decide to “back it”, ensure your knot joining the backing to the braid is right up against the rear flange of the spool when you wind it on. That way the lump under the braid formed by the knot will have a lesser effect on impeding your cast.

Some guys even put a small tab of tape over the knot to help smooth it out.

Funny related story. Lately I've been fishing with 4lb straight through on a shallow spooled reel. Recently I had a bad wind knot which lost a lot of line. Added to my other incidental losses over the past couple of years, this brought me down to a critical level, but I was too lazy to get round to respooling.

The other morning I made a big cast and realised I'd literally cast off my entire spool of line, maybe 20m or so worth! I was very lucky I donutted that morning!

Needless to say I respooled with another 100m of 4lb that evening.

My BFS baitcaster holds 50m of 4lb with a full spool 😁

It will be interesting if I ever hook a big, Basin flatty on it.

Braid or mono? Braid is expensive and doesn't degrade like mono. So it would be worth keeping 70m. You are not likely to cast that far on an ultralight combo.

@faker reverse it as well so the fresh, unused braid is on the top. No point throwing out line if half of it has never seen water.

If the reel still works and you are still happy to fish with it, then put more $5 braid on it. Better to have it catching fish than having it collect dust.

I do use it frequently on wading session. I caught my squid on it on the 2-6kg rod

I would chuck it and buy another 150m, the lump from the backing knot will become and issue when casting. On my shallow spool reels I dont use any backing at all because of this issue. Filling a 2500 reel is not expensive, especially when you consider what it costs when moving up in reel sizes.
