XD351
G’day Raiders, this landed on my feed today and I thought I would post it as a FYI. It makes me wonder how low a council will stoop for the mighty dollar 😔 60yrs of history gone with the stroke of a pen - makes me sad and angry . https://www.facebook.com/share/v/ZWJechbcyRQk631A/?mibextid=KsPBc6 Edited June 2 by mrsswordfisherman Direct link to news item inserted

Blackfish
Im led to believe at one stage some colourful identities were involved back about 10-15 years ago and they were trying to get it zoned residential. (One has done time or still doing it) and was a “Voted” in member of the community. Again Ive been told the person who gave the land stated it couldn’t be sold off for residential purposes. They used to have a good meat raffle there on I think a Friday night. I went to a few as I worked at Rockdale then.

I used to service the grease trap there about 15yrs ago , I remember looking at it and thinking this is a club I would join if it was out my way . A bloke from work used to go there often - said it was a good club .
mrsswordfisherman
Thanks for posting this Zoran oops sorry Ian. I saw this yesterday and can’t imagine how the call to action that they posted on 16th May did not get shared here by anyone. I am sure all fishraiders are very sad and angry to see this club and its premises disappear. Feel free to post any further news on this.

wazatherfisherman
Very sad news indeed. BAFA (the club) used to be THE venue for many, many fishing competitions. Excellent facilities including the first fish cleaning station that I can remember, as well as licensed premises, ramp, wharf structure etc. From memory, they also had their own boat that did 'deep-dropping' around Browns Mountain, years and years before Brown's became a known spot. As juniors, Raiders Yowie, JimT and I all received trophies (in different years) from Sydney Metropolitan Division competitions (the old AFCA -amateur fishing clubs association) that were run using BAFA as a base and weigh-in point. There was plenty of parking for boats, plenty of room at the weigh-in for both competitors and onlookers, good food (and cold beers) and always well organised. Another thing this club did was to let the local community know when there was going to be a competition weigh-in, and even as a junior, remember heaps of people turning up and carting off plenty of free fish once the weighing was completed- there were no bag limits in those days and I watched people happily filling bags, baskets and shopping trolleys with fresh, free fish- something I haven't seen anywhere else in over 55+years of fishing. With fishing club premises disappearing over the years, it's a crying shame that it isn't deemed 'important' enough for anyone in authority to recognise the value of community-minded organisations -such as this- remaining as/where they are, to continue providing members of the fishing (and social) community with a home base. Noted also that the club is home to a Men's Shed, yet another important community organisation that offers facilities supporting both community and mental health, not to mention as a meeting place like no other, for participants. Hopefully, someone of stature/authority will intervene and come up with a compromise, enabling the club to continue on and the rich history that accompanies the venue to be saved for future generations. Maybe the Land and Environment court will view this in a better light, recognising the genuine need for clubs like this to remain as the important link that they actually are. Communities NEED such places, that provide a platform for sport, recreation, community-mindedness and mental health well-being. Just my two cents worth, but GENUINELY hope their local council or whoever the final decision-maker/s are, can realise the value of both the ongoing need for the club, and the preservation of heritage, for the community as a whole. 3
XD351
I first heard of this a few days back , it was on the radio show HiTide and by Mark Banasiak- from the SFFP. I sent Mark a message yesterday inquiring as to any updates and he replied notifying me that he will be banging on the relevant ministers door this week to try and sort this out and that the club is also looking into some legal options so fingers crossed sanity prevails ! big Neil
Yet another example of the community being disregarded and disrespected by their local Council...so that some individual can profit. I hope that something can be done to prevent this from happening. bn

XD351
So all that happened back in 2014 ? None of the links work so I can’t look at anything. Strange how it has been 10 yrs since that post ! Aren’t the statutes of limitations 10yrs ? Probably barking up the wrong tree again ! Anyhow all I can do is let those dealing with it do their job and maybe sign a petition if one presents itself or turn up to a rally if I can . I’m getting sick and tired of councils using stealth tactics to surprise us poor fishos with their stupid ideas and demands - always thought everything had to go through a public notice period before any decision were made - I’m sure if it did the club would have known about this last year .

The Club went broke back then. Some of the members resurrected it - just keeping the boating facilities. But the council owns the land.

What I can’t understand is why would the council evict a club that does so much for the community , they have diversified their operations to maximise community inclusion only to let Volunteer Marine Rescue to lease the site ? The promise of more green space for the community doesn’t hold water because they could rejuvenate the site , keep the BCRC there , share it with VMR and give the community more green space ( a reduced size but better than nothing ) and everyone wins . Nothing in this whole issue is to benefit the community , only someone’s bank account.
Yowie
Well said Waza. Spent time there at the weigh-ins as a junior fisho to collect a few prizes and badges. As a detective, I had a few after work drinks there and attended a few functions as well. A drinking hole, as well as the Rockdale Businessmans Club, favoured by detectives from the city and southern areas. On night shift, I visited the area and observed fishos pulling out a few large mud crabs. Thought about catching one or two for a feed, though it was not in my job description 😂 and I would probably have been called to a investigation during the crabbing process.
