The Solomon Islands part 2

Recommended Posts

After day 1 we were eager to get into the fishing, day 2 the morning session was slow, we fished softvibes every depth between 20 and 120m  we landed a few trout

But otherwise the vibing and jigging was slow, we moved on to chasing yellowfin on the troll, I did actually manage to hook a reasonable yellowfin on a metal casting slug on my 20lb setup, thankfully the hooks pulled before it reached the ocean plug it was diving down for

It proves even the best fishing locations have slow days, heasing in a bit early to escape the heat we trolled a solid reef edge, it didn't take long for a take

This poor bluefin was a little out gunned by our 80lb set-up, the islanders love to eat these so it was quickly in the box  next was Amy's turn and again it didn't take long, Amy landed a big barracuda which was released boatside for safety

After the slow morning I had a lunchtime snorkel

In the buoys is home reef

Full of life

And there's no shortage of hermit crabs to watch

Amy was feeling unwell and sat out the arvo session

Did manage a nce bluefin

But otherwise a relatively slow arvo, then something interesting happened our guide Eric points to my baitcaster and asks if I can use it well, so we spend awhile casting at some mangroves stirring small trevally, with that he agrees to go for a river session the following afternoon when the tides are right, chasing mangrove jack and the prize spot tail bass

Day 3 morning again Amy takes a rest so I head out for a few hours for a few mac tuna even had a brown tree  snake next to the walkway.

Coming back early and Amy feeling a bit better we decide to walk to a nearby waterfall  hearing there are JPs in said creek I took the light set-up

Only a small fall but beautiful and refreshing

And of course jungle perch present

This was legit the biggest one in the pool

Then it was time to head into the river, we were greeted by a local resident

Apparently croc attacks in the Solomon's are extremely rare

We got into the casting, me I was catching archerfish and plenty of them eventually earning we the name "archer king"

Amy on the other hand

A nice jack to add to the species list

We worked our way up with the tide and thankfully

I got myself a small jack, working into tye freshwater Eric tells us  we're in the spottie area, we got out and walked a sandbar casting at snags, we put in plenty of casts I frustratingly busted on a snag but we kept plugging away

Amy snags a banana leaf Eric helps her jiggle it free a few cranks of the reel and Amy's rod is loaded up, Eric was by her side in a flash I couldn't get the video cam to work, then it's over and a beautiful spot tail is at Amy's feet

It's funny when you suddenly realise the significance of a capture, Eric fully lost it over Amy's spot tail, apparently the first in atleast 6 months he was so excited.

I tried hard for a spottie I had a couple of opportunities but just didn't pay off although the archer king was in fine form

We returned on a high

Our morning session for day 4 was back in the river but it was uneventful just a few small big eye trevally

The arvo session was casting poppers, Amy again under the weather rested in the boat while Eric and I fished

I scored a coupke of nice bluefin

received_958826719269580.thumb.jpeg.1df44ef0aee8a5be582cee8cebdd58a9.jpeg

And had a big Spanish mac launch on ky popper but unfortunately chewed through the leader

With only 2 fishing days left we were hoping things would fire up.... and yes they would

To be continued

Well done, I don't know if it's still there, but there was a jetty that they used to catch squid of basically right out the front of the resort.

Some lovely looking fish, hopefully a few more fish on the troll.

That's fishing for you...great locations and the best of intentions still can't guarantee the fish want to play. What were you catching the Archer fish on Dave? Any photos of them? Are they the fish that shoot a jet of water from their mouths to knock insects into the water?

Great catch of the Spot Tail Amy and some action on the Jacks too.

Looking forward to the next post.

You got any videos that we can have a look at Dave? Quite interested in the Archer fish as I saw them on an Attenborough video some time back, very cunning fish.

Great that you and Amy are enjoying life and travelling to remote places for your fishing.

Cheers
