Mike Sydney
Had a bit of a win on the dishlickers on the weekend and bought a Penn Prevail II 12’ 6-12kg for some beach fishing. I didn’t have a long beach rod previously so have meaning to get one for a while. Didn’t do a lot of research just wanted to spend it fast before it went back to the bookies! Anyways, my question is on reel size and line class. This’ll be used mainly for salmon/tailor off the beach using 50-60g metals and stick baits. Cast weight on rod is 20-85g. I have a Stradic 3000 HG from another rod already loaded with 12lb braid. Can I get away with that reel doing beach duty as well for most species? I presume this will still be ample for most fish I’d be catching on those types of lures and will be fine for casting distance? Will 12lb be fine for that weight of metal? I got a birthday coming up I’m sure I could convince the wife to buy me a new reel if it makes more sense. Gut is saying I can just use the Stradic I have with a heavier leader but would welcome thoughts. Thanks, Mike Edited July 4 by Mike Sydney
Green Hornet
Ideally I’d be looking at a 6000 size reel to match your new rod and stated lure weights. Braid, something around PE2.0 is ideal. I used to use PE1.5 aiming for maximum distance, but with heavier metals I felt the thinner braid could have possibly cut my finger when casting. You can give the 3000 a go and it should work, though with the Prevail being a heavy rod, your outfit will be out of balance and quite tip heavy. As far as the 12lb braid goes, sometimes I’ve found if you go too light, when casting the line can tend to choke in the stripper guide causing either a 10 metre cast or a snapped leader knot and a lure that will enter NZ airspace. If this happens, just cast gently for now and strongly consider the larger reel. 2
Mike Sydney
See this is why I keep coming back, thanks @Green Hornet appreciate the advice. Figure I could squeeze $250-$300 on a reel out of the birthday, any recommendations on a reel?

Perhaps if you shop around you could find a 6000 Saragosa or Stradic SW for under 300. I have a Stradic SW 4000 and it’s a great little reel for spinning the beaches.
james Cutler
I have the same rod. I use a Penn Slammer4 4500HS reel. I use it for the beach & rocks. These reels will stop a Mack truck. ( IMO ) The other reel I use is a Penn Clash 5000. Also great for the beach.
Steve0
If you buy a Saragosa, make sure it is SWA. SWA was released for quite a while now but there may still be a few of the older model about. That's not saying the old model had any significant problem (my SW F 5000 is a great reel), just that the new model is improved. https://www.alanhawk.com/reviews/sgwa.html
james Cutler
i used to use Shimano reels. they seem to have lost their quality over the years & they got pricey. I switched to Penn & never looked back. In saying that the Stradic has always been a good reel. I would have a look at the new FM 5000 model. Not cheap.
slothparade
4500 Penn slammer hs will pair nicely. I tried a Saragosa 6000 on a Penn prevails 6-12 kg and it didn't feel the best, prefered the slammer for the prevail. The 6500 slammer fits really well on a 10-20kg rod
