JaniFIN
This post was recognized by mrsswordfisherman! "Outstanding report and pics of fishing in Finland" JaniFIN was awarded the badge 'Great Content' and 1000 points. We went 1 week on Finnish "mountains" . Plan was try graylings and white fishs. We have been this area years after years. Water temperature is normally between +5'c to +13'c. Now it was +19'c !!. So we know that chance catch bigger fish is minimalistic. Edit: End of this report is links to earlier years reports from same area, when we catch nice fishs Anyway. We start trip driving 14 hours by car to Kilpisjärvi with Vili and my uncle Esko. We met rest of group there. We tuck helicopter and fly to Poroeno river, was really hot. First i put my heat measure in water and it was + 19.5'c. OMG how warm. We put tent and made camp, and rest. Also we swimming with Vili. first evening we did not catch any legal limit fishes. Vili feel sick and he get fever. First morning was hot, in tent +44'c, and Vili was still fever. We was middle off nowhere, neares road was 32km away, other side mountains area. In tent was to hot be inside and outside was too much moskitos. We walk little upper on open hill and rest there with Vili, becouse wind was strongetmr there and was litle shadow between rocks. No one catch legal fish that day. Some of us fishig night and catch one 48cm white fish and just limit grayling. We eat that smoked. Was again so hot that cant rest on tent day time. We made "sun shelter" and rest there. Vili feel better allready. We try fishing mostly night time, little darker, even sun not go down night time in horizon, it go behind mountains for couole off minutes. My uncle missed big white fish when try get in net, about 60cm. I hooked one whitefish in fly, but pike strike to whitefish and pull all my line out, and cut line. We try with packraft with Vili. Second last day we find good whitefish feeding area. But only 30min was calm water, with out any wind. Vili hooked 3 BIG whitefishs, but all escape allmoste same second when they strike. Later we find reason, we had too small hooks so big whitefishs. Usually whitefish need exactly enough small hooks, but them was so big and strike was so agressive, that hooks was too small. Anyway, was nice be one week with out any link, web or anything contact to anywhere. We catch only 6 legal fish for eat, me and Vili not catch any legal fishs. But "most important thing" we done. Made pancakes on camp, and went sauna after trip. That sauna, on Kilpisjärvi, there is best views what i know, when yo u go swimming, you can see swedish, norwegian and finnish mountains same time. Next year have plan go even 1 week later, sun go down allready for 10 to 15 min every night, it made even little cooler weather, even is sunny days. Allso have plan that our younger son Veikka come with us next time and we try go really good grayling river what we know better. Have to modification tent too, need one more and bigger "ventilation window" with moskito net. Night is allways better time fishing there, water is calm and it is not so hot, it is litte darker and fishes is not so carefull. But then need sleep day time and +40'c in tent is too hot for that. Little_Flatty
I’ve been reading a lot about grayling lately. What a spectacular target and a beautiful environment to target them in. Fantastic report and photos.
