faker
Messing around middle head today, did some standard rock climb else where for bait. Then checked out areas near obelisk for kingfish spot down cliff. Found route down. Met up with friend for luderick fishing. Within 3 hour lost 5 fish inc drummer manage to bag 3. Will need to.work on better hook up rates on downs Manage to get mate on his first

XD351
Maybe try a little longer 3-4 seconds , I used to count to 6 which in real time was about 3seconds . 5
Little_Flatty
At least you found the fish. That’s 90 percent of the battle.

There are quite a few ledges people can fish of it.

Good advice from @XD351 It can really vary too…. If float rockets down, you can strike straight away. Otherwise, I start off at 3 secs. My count is ‘thousands’ ie 1 thousand, 2 thousand, 3 thousand If still not connecting, wait longer. stu. Edited August 10 by Burger 5
TheFishyFisherman
Good job. But was it really necessary to brag about this on one of my threads when I just told everyone I had another donut on the luds?🤣 1

sashkello
Nice fish! Yeah, what everyone says - count 3 seconds and don't hurry, luderick bite typically is very slow, you'll immediately recognize it, most other fish pulls, they just take it and move with it. Drummer pulls hard down, that one you need to strike early otherwise it'll snag you. Also, what hook are you using? Downsizing my hooks was the most impactful change for me. And don't put too much cabbage on, make sure it's all very concentrated around the barb, so that they take it all in one bite and not drag it around holding by the side.
Koalaboi
Hi, Many have given good advice in terms of timing your strike. I generally count to 5 to 8 before striking. I once saw a fellow fishraider count to 20! Other variables you could think about include: 1. Having a longer leader 2. Varying the depth 3, greasing your mainline so that it floats 4. ensuring that there’s no loop in your line between the rod tip and your float 5. increasing the amount of ballast below your float On hooking drummer on blackfish gear, I have found it best to let them run at first and try to play them out in the deeper water before trying to land them. Bringing them in close while they are still green always sees them bolt for a snag. KB 5

Koalaboi
BTW, I love fishing for luderick...I've been at it since I was 17 and I am now 71...but I have to say, drummer are a much better feed than blackfish but not, like flathead, if they're too big. For pigs, fish much longer than 40cm are too dry and chewy/coarse. The same for flatties over 65cm (or thereabouts). I remember keeping a flattie (many years ago) well over 80cm and she was not worth killing, cleaning and cooking let alone eating. Interestingly, big blackfish (my biggest at 48cm) seem OK....mind you, I was speaking to a feller today who won't eat them. KB

Provided you clean them properly they are very tasty, in my opinion. bn

KB dad became interested in eating them after first one. working on finding out of way spots that he can physically handle but clifton is too congested but i think spit bridge is a go to. Bradley head also on my radar. i have a couple more spots but even balmoral off the rocks is a contender

The problem with the spit is current - it has lots of it .

I haven’t actually tried there with the new wharf, it seems a bit further out from shore which may make a difference to where the ferry wash ends up and where the fish sit to take advantage of that

I used to fish the left corner closest to the shore ( as you walk down the ramp ) for luderick and the other end for leatherjacket ( I believe this is where the remnants of the old wooden wharf pylons are and the jackets hang around in there ) couple of kids were doing alright on the flathead, bream and trevalley off the front . Usually you can find some sand on the pontoon if it is a decent luderick spot but this thing was spotless. One wharf I haven’t fished is the newest version of Luna park - it’s a pretty big structure.

I was lucky to be taught the ropes there by a bloke named Stanley , he had been fishing there most of his life and man couldn’t he catch luderick! Hard to believe it was 25+ yrs ago !
