Burger
Not always about the number of fish caught... 4 blokes, 6 hours, 5 fish. Not naming who caught how many to protect the innocents. Great day with great blokes.

big Neil
Always nice to be out there fishing, even nicer to be out there being mesmerised by the gentle rocking of the float as the anticipation builds. Much, much nicer to be in the company of your friends sharing the experience. Somehow the numbers caught lose relevance to the joy of the overall experience. They say that a picture paints a thousand words...yours certainly does. Job well done Burger. bn
Green Hornet
Great pics Stu. Five fish is still not too shabby and by the sounds of it, it was a nice day out with good company and you just can’t buy that.
Little_Flatty
Sounds like a great day out Stu, well done. Tough going if four experienced anglers could only manage five fish. Given that my first decent luderick was on a hardbody lure and the next good few were on fly, I have to admit I finally understand the appeal of fishing for the luderick the traditional way, float fishing with bait. It’s very therapeutic watching that float and when that it starts to move, the adrenaline rush is as good as any other kind of fishing.

I only got 2 fish, dropped 2 and maybe 2 other downs… yet the day was fabulous! 1 hour ago, Little_Flatty said: Sounds like a great day out Stu, well done. I grew up with most family holidays being fishing and some particularly strong memories are of Luderick fishing. To be able to spend some peaceful time watching a float drift, smelling the salt and listening to the river is very regenerative. You can always tell when someone gets a touch on their float, that quick gentle spike of adrenaline and anticipation shows straight away 😅 Edited August 18 by Burger

XD351
So where did you say you got your weed from again ? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 That spot is one of the ones I want to try in the future - any tips like what depth etc ? I take it you’re fishing the last of the run in? Do you find the ferry wash affects the bite ( increase , decrease or not at all ) Did you park down there ? If yes what is parking situation like ? Greenwich wharf is another spot I have yet to fish - it was regarded as a hotspot for luderick when I was a kid , not sure what it is like now . Another couple are darling st and birchgrove - haven’t been to those for donkeys years!

Greenwich wharf Tide was run out from dead high to low, How deep depended on where on the walkway you fished. Varied from 8' (me at the shore end) to about 10' along the walkway. Shallowed up over the day, but not much. Maybe 1-1.5' Ferry didn't seem to make any difference, Yes we all got parks. Saw a report on a Facebook group recently from Greenwich wharf and they got a few, well more than we managed.

wazatherfisherman
I've been following this thread with great interest Stu, all fishers should experience the joy of Luderick fishing. Why? For the reasons you've already outlined, plus the great learning gained from an absolutely 'purposeful' mission. A specific (and realistic!) target, sporting qualities, learning about tides and water movement, different food sources and presentation, finesse, patience, care of your catch- the list goes on and on. It can be as 'laid back' or high energy as you choose. There are so many different locations and scenarios to Luderick, with the added bonus of them being great on the plate. Great stuff

Great stuff Yep, agree 100%, fishing for them is an entirely different approach to almost any other type of fishing, it’s tricky, requires effort and a bit of thinking. I really enjoy it, though I am by no means one of those experts that seem to be able to catch them when others don’t. They are very good on the plate, especially the bigger ones, filleted, skinned and cooked quickly they are great eating. There’s a lot said about bleeding, scraping the black stomach lining off and all that kind of stuff, but, I have found, as long as they are fresh, then they are good eating, whether all that stuff is done or not.

I’ve noticed myself peering into canals everywhere I go, peering over the edge of every ferry wharf and keeping random plastic Tupperware boxes in our car and (gasp!) my laptop bag! 1

Larkin
Sounds like you had a nice session! 🤙 Love those glorious mornings ps. For those searching for weed - always plenty of weed down Cronulla on the rocks during low tide at Shelly beach and Oak Park
XD351
I was down at putney today flicking some rubber and noticed that the rocks are starting to get some growth on them, it’s been a while since I have seen the rocks so green ! Maybe worth looking in the bays that aren’t affected by the ferry wash and hopefully the floods have gone , I hope to collect some water for my home grown green weed farm very soon now that the algae is starting to grow again .
