faker
So after the dreaded donut yesterday and weed to spare. I headed out to clifton gardens with my old man to teach him art luderick fishing. Was slow first half a hour manage to hook huge one but lost it with hook. Another blackfish fisho arrived with burley but did not catch anything for remainder of time i was there. I was wandering around wharf to keep tabs where the school of fish is.Then caught 1 small one a hour later 30cm and 1 hour after that a 36cm. Did not have net on standby and was lucky other fisho gave me net and managed to get big one in just before it spat hook Fish was really finicky that day but ran into @Little_Flatty on way out Can someone tell me how to identify male and female fish? noelm
Mostly males have a lighter body and darker head, but, this is only my thoughts, and it’s mostly right, but now and then I catch a “male” full of roe…..
Little_Flatty
Good to meet you @faker. We donutted but I did get three downs and two dropped fish, one of which had a bit of size to it. The second one was when I was on the phone to @DerekD. No fish to show for it unfortunately but good to load the rod up for a while. Had to hang up quickly because my daughter caught a toad. She was very pleased with herself to be the only one to catch a fish🤣 They were very finicky as you said. I was fishing 4lb leader and I saw fish taking in the bait and spitting it out, without even moving the float!
Peter K
I tried for one of the first time all month yesterday afternoon. Found a decent amount of weed on my pontoon in the Georges River. I think I had 10lb leader on. 2nd cast pulled one around 34cm. Then a few cast later I pulled one around 30cm but it spat the hook as I lifted it out (i don't fish with a net/just lift the rod sky high and onto land). I had one more with take it and I let it run to get some fun, it then get too close to a pylon and spat the hook, would have only been just legal. I don't seem to struggle with the hookups, there is also an abundance the only thing making it tricky is the unfathomable amount of jetski's and extreme wind. It makes it almost impossible to know when the float is above or below. I think weekend luderick fishing is a no go, at least in my areas. I may try this afternoon or some time tomorrow.

I have just bought a float with an extra long stem which seems to cope better with the chop than others. It’s a blackfish float but 2/3 of its length is stem, with a teardrop shaped bulb at the top of the stem. As a consequence even when correctly weighted it sits well above the water. It’s worth buying or making something like that. I’m happy enough with it.

Time to invest in japanese net that i can wear on belt

Time to invest in japanese net that i can wear on belt I have a pro trust telescopic net, which has bucked the trend by getting CHEAPER since the pandemic! You have to change out the netting for a deeper net though.I also noticed a different carbon telescopic net has come onto the market but the name eludes me. I am now looking for a new feature in the net; the ability to autonomously walk down to you when you are onto a fish and realise you left it in the car! 1

Looking at the ones nabu uses.

I’ve said it many times before, but I will say it again; a good quality telescopic net is worth its weight in gold for a land based angler. Only issue is that 3m often isn’t enough at many low tide harbour spots. It can be an exercise in contortion to land a fish. So when I’m fishing for luderick, I like my 5m ISO net like the one in your photo. Expensive, but I’d rather fish with cheaper rods and reels and have a net, than to fish with higher end gear and not have one!
noelm
Blackfish have got a “soft” mouth, and small hooks used, so direct lifting a fish will often result in a lost fish, so a landing net is almost essential. Around the rocks, fish can be often be washed up using waves. So in summary, the type of net needed will be determined by the area you fish, a long handle can be necessary, but at others, it can be a hindrance.

Instead used a bobby cork Quite a few very experienced blackfishermen use small bobby corks, particularly from the ocean rocks. They’re good for long casts if needed and long traces up to 2 metres in clear, flat water when the fish are shy.
XD351
I have a cheap standard extendable one - prymal brand and 1.9m , ok for Narrabeen lagoon , maybe some ferry wharves and a longer one coming from a guy in Wollongong, along with some of his floats ,3.5m long for the slightly higher wharves and lower rock walls . A lot of the ferry wharves have a glass enclosure so a really long net can be difficult if not impossible to use . Mike , is the iso net screw together sections or pull out extension? Having a net like the 1.9 extension type I have with a couple of 1m screw on or clip in extensions pieces would give the best options - need a short net , use the 1.9 length , need a bit longer - add an extension to get 2.9m , need longer - add another extension to get 3.9m - sounds like one of those tv adds for ladders 🤣🤣🤣

You can use it solo but it takes practice, but clearly it’s not hard because I can manage it! It’s pretty huge - collapsed it’s still about six ft tall. But 5.5m of reach is really something. PM me if can’t find it but I’m sure you will …well known Sydney ISO shop in Eastwood and Croydon😎. Not cheap but worth it. I wish I had it when I was up north with the big tidal variations. Different nets for different applications. I wouldn’t be using the 5.5m net in a kayak, for instance!

Although I have never seen anyone fishing for them there .
Burger
Or buy a $20 Wilson net, bolt it onto a painters extension pole that goes out to 3.6m takes it out to about 14’. It’s about 6’ un-extended without the net, so fits in the car like a 2 piece rod. I find most places I use a net, you need a bit of length.
