The biggest

Just had a thought, I wonder how “the biggest fish” of species thread would go? Members could add their biggest of each nominated species until we have a winner……mind you, honesty would play a big part, lots of fish caught years ago would not have photos taken. I reckon I might even claim a couple of species. I did a bit of a search and didn’t find anything similar, of course there’s the record section, but that’s quite current, a few “old timers” would have some very memorable catches.

Noel. Like you I have caught many fine specimens in the past and have no photos or proof of such captures.

In the days prior to digital cameras, I very seldom had a camera with me while fishing for various reasons, although I had my own darkroom and printed my own photos I never had the equipment to develop the negative so had to have it done in a photo lab which was costly and timely. You had to be sure you wanted the photo as the film rolls were only 36 photos per roll.

And in them days what you caught one day was pretty easy to repeat the next trip, so catching sizable fish was pretty common and no big deal. There was always the exceptionally large species caught but seldom was a camera handy at the time.

My largest 4 or 5 fish I have no records of just memory's.

Even since I obtained digital cameras seldom would I carry one on my boat. phone cameras which are the norm in this time, I just don't seem to catch the fish I used to.

Yep, old photography was an expensive exercise, you bought a roll of film, fitted it carefully in your camera, took photos, winding the film onto the next position, took another photo and so on, until the roll was full, there was no way to review the pictures. Then you packed them up, sent them off to be developed, and hoped to god at least some were decent…….a week or so later, and half a weeks pay, your prints were posted back. You open the packet and there is glossy colour was half a face, or an over exposed impossible to recognise picture, now and then you hit the jackpot and got a good picture……they were the days. I have at least a moderate quality photo of my biggest Kingfish, Jewfish, a few Marlin, various Lobster pictures, a decent Yellowfin, though not my biggest.

We already have a huge collection of biggest fish in our Bait and Lure Fishing Records. They are usually accompanied by  a report here on the capture.
We have had many fake photos and even people claiming fish as their own. We banned a few.

If you would like to run this in Catch Brag Board go ahead. Nominate the species and a timeframe to enter.
Good luck Noel and thanks.

Yeah, I stopped bringing my phone to the beach after the last one died getting sand and ocean water in it. Only after reading this forum I realized how huge one of my first ever legal breams really was... Kind of created unrealistic expectations for me, thinking in retrospect. Don't have picture of it because didn't think it's worth bragging about...

But I'm always curious to see what others have caught, especially when details on technique, bait & lures used are outlined. Another opportunity to learn!
