Bate Bay again

Recommended Posts

Headed out to Bate Bay this morning, just as the sun was on the horizon. Southerly swell, south/west windchop, then shortly after wind turned north/west and kicked up the chop again, which made for a bumpy time.

Started off in shallower water, over 100 feet. Mostly spikies, and a couple of blue spots. Moved a few times to get away from the spikies, but there were in most places, even deeper water. Moved out to around 200 feet, but the wind pushed along the drift. Needed to let out a fair bit of line, with a 12 ounce sinker to hold bottom.

Tried for red spot whiting, but kept hooking up flatties - blue spots, tigers, spikies instead - on the small whiting hooks.. Only one red spot pulled up. All flatties below 40cm, except for one blue spot at 52cm, biggest tiger at 38cm. Kept 4 tigers, and released more than double that number of undersized ones.

One whale heading south, and a few dolphins kicking about.

Out there today to beat the strong winds over the next few days.

Smashing the flatties!

Pitty the drift was fast. This time of the year those strong winds will be around for another month.

Surprising the number of tigers about, though most are undersized.

Windy time of year from the west, though I read that November is the windiest on average according to the BOM !

you certainly know how to find them. It must tough to keep 'getting' flatties instead of whiting, I usually keep 'getting' 🍩 when going for anything 🤣

thanks for sharing as always, a good reminder to all of us that the fish are there!

Thank you.

It was 'tough'  having the flatties biting.  😂  I have fished in Bate Bay for many years, so have an idea where they might be.

Thanks Rob.

You are a master of finding fillets when the going gets tough, great results over winter and I'm sure you'll be back in the Hacking soon when the water warms up:)
