Fathers day squidding

Recommended Posts

The missus has been watching squidding videos on the internet. So we planned a quick fathers day session on sunday.

As we all know sunday was going to be a windy day. And with only a window of opportunity of nice weather before the wind came before lunch. We decided it was too good to not go try or else we would stay home and wonder what could of been.

Launched at kurnel and we drifted around the groynes. First drift a banger on the sleeper rod. 2nd drift missus caught one on the drop. 3rd drift missus caught one on the side of the boat as she was jerking the squid jig to see how it swims.

We decided that was enough and drove around the corner to kurnel beach as it was a lot more secluded than silver beach to let the kiddos swim. As we were leaving we pulled out the boat into deeper water, Only for her to step on what she thought was a squid. And for dumbass me to look and see what it was and step on what looked to me was a numbray.

i think that was more than enough action for the day we decided to pack up and go home before the wind kicked in.

3 squid better than none. Would make for a nice feed.

Better to step on a numb ray, then step off it, than have it grab a lure with a treble hook, hook it in the mouth and try and retrieve the lure. Not going to happen, let it go with the lure still in it's mouth.

Nice feed of squid, did you get zapped by the ray?

Luckily no. As i stepped on it and jumped it of the water. I saw it swim out and hid back under the sand.

Lucky.

Push a nipper pump into the sand, instead, there is a numb ray buried in the sand and you try to push the pump through him. 200 volts straight up your arms. 🤣

Or, prawning at night, walking slowly and carefully so as not to disturb the prawns, then stand on a numb ray. You jump, swear, and all the prawns swim off.  :074:

Nice squids, how’d the launch at Kurnell go? Can get quite shallow there and very choppy on a windy day

The ramp is very shallow. We launched on high tide and it was a breeze. When we retrieved on low time, my rear tyres were off the ramp and into the sand my trailer was deep in washed up kelp. Wasnt very pleasant. I only have a little 4.5m runabout and it was a bit hard as i usually drive on and drive off the trailer.

Not worth the hassle of using the kurnel ramp. Next time would definitely be using the Botany Bay foreshore ramp.
