Sydney first time offshore

Hi All, this Saturday some mates and I are planning on heading out the heads fishing some close offshore reefs or long reef. Most of us have never fished out of Sydney harbour before and are quite keen to try catch some legal size snapper and possibly a kingfish. All of us except for my mates dad have no clue what to do or where to go and I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on location, technique and whether to bother having a look at some of the closer offshore reefs or to go to long reef. I've been scouring this site for past articles about long reef however I have found there are very few about fishing winter / spring. Any info would be greatly appreciated

If you’re a complete newbie, best advice, find some reef and do some drifting around and see what’s going on. Just a standard old Paternoster rig to get started, probably some fish flesh bait or half Pilchards.

Thanks for the advice, keeping it simple seems to always work no matter the type of fishing

long reef is usually fished with a downrigger or a poor mans downrigger slowly trolling along livies. also productive place to fish soft plastics. the outer reefs most fished like 12 mile and the peak use big snapper sinkers with livies and drop to where the fish are on the sounder. 

Like noelm said at the peak if its your first time just use a patenoster rig with fresh yakka fillets and get some deep sea bream etc etc.
