Aussie_fisher
Headed over to middle harbour yesterday with my mate. Usually fish the parra and Sydney harbour so wanted to switch it up and try a new area. Arrived at around 11 and got set up We had 3 rods - 2 lighter setups with a running sinker rig and pea sized sinker just for general bream, snapper etc: and one bigger one with unweighted pillies as I’d heard pelagics pass by there. First cast I managed to hook a pinkie. This one was 26cm so it fought pretty well and I was hopeful that there would be even bigger ones. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case. For the next 2 hours the bite completely shut down. Something interesting that happened though was a school of big mullet came and started attacking the pillies and prawn I was throwing in the water. They even started attacking my hook but didn’t get stuck. I always thought they were vegetarian and this was very strange a while later the bite started again. However it was only pickers. Tonnes of small snapper and bream and they were a big nuisance since they kept getting gut hooked. Suddenly my rod jerked forward and I had a decent run and big head shakes. It spat the hook but I’m sure there was something decent on the other end. A while later I hook up again. This runs hard and up comes a very nice Trev which is dinner. And then I hook up again but this feels very strange. It’s a leatherjacket and I’ve never actually eaten them though I’ve caught a few before so he’s also thrown in the net. And then a legal bream finally since I’d caught like 100 around the 20cm mark And then as fate would have it the bite slowed again and stayed that way until dusk. We managed to pull 2 or 3 Trevs at dusk with one more dinner sized and a lot of pinkies again (where are their parents?????) the yakkas also came along so I tied a tiny hook and pulled quite a few. I wanted to freeze them for next weeks trip, but heard they get all mushy so dehydrating them in salt first hopefully that helps. if anyone has any suggestions on how to freeze yakkas I’d appreciate it. overall was a good day. I was hoping for some good snapper or something but unfortunately there weren’t and no pelagics seemed to pass by and want to touch my pillie either. Happy with the trevs though
