Yowie
Headed out early this morning, up past Lilli Pilli to the deep water where I have pulled out a few jewies lately. what a waste of time, nothing but little reddies no bigger than 25cm, stripping off all the baits - squid, fish strips, pillies. Not a decent bite, not a decent run, no yakkas or anything else on the bait line. Had to get something to take home, so drifted the main channel in a few spots - nothing. Not looking good, so last thought was a secret little spot near Jibbon Point, where sometimes small blue spot flatties can be found. I did not have any heavier rods on board for deep water bottom bashing so tried this spot, shallower than the deep water. 3 drifts and I pulled up 5 small blue spots, just over legal to 38cm, and a 30 cm flounder. A feed at least. Cooked the fillets in breadcrumbs tonight, the grand daughter happy, and she wants more flounder. 😂
Restyle
But quite out there now, the hacking being rather bipolar it seems, but you did manage a feed as always

At least some whiting are about. Yes, a feed caught, so better than nothing.
Basil D
The port hacking and the bay can turn right off but as an experienced fisho you can always take something home, and I dont blame your grand daughter for wanting more flounder

A couple of surface splashes near the boat, looked like salmon but no hits on a lure. I had to take some fish home! I fillet the flounder and remove the bones, very nice eating.
zmk1962
Well done Dave given the slow/no bite day. Do you think the low Hacking activity correlates with the last phase of a waning moon? cheers Z

Robbo from Sydney
Well done Yowie - as always. On Friday I tried out around the mouth of Middled Harbour again and not a bite, apart from one porcupine. Seems like it might still be hit and miss till the water gets a bit warmer

I look for the tide depending on where I am fishing and what for, the wind and time of day. Some times the fish will be on during a full moon, other times not much happening. Maybe breeding time has started for other species as well.
Larkin
One of those days Dave, but a good catch in the end. good to have a back up spot out of the weather. Outside there were 2-2.5m swells coming from the south on Friday. Wave period was long, so not too bad, but much larger than predicted.

I could see it was a bit lumpy further out, so fished where I thought it would be less bouncy.

Aware bait fish get shy with full moon (knock on effect to other species) … but it’s the opposite period now. Just before no moon. Was wondering if that maps to the hacking quite period. M and I will test the Hawkesbury Sunday/Monday. cheers Z
Little_Flatty
Always a great catch Dave. If you ever donut (maybe once a decade?) give your family a break from fish and stay away from the seafood shop! 🤣

I try not to visit a seafood shop to buy ( I always look in a seafood shop if I am walking past one, visit a fish co-op along the coast if travelling somewhere, visit the seafood trucks along the roadside 🤣 ) but only buy if I need/want some fish, or especially prawns. When travelling, and I visit a co-op/roadside truck for a quick look, the wife always says "what fish are we eating tonight?", and if I say "I didn't buy any", she thinks there is something wrong with me, so I always buy something . At least I know if it is fresh fish. 1
big Neil
,Looks like the grand daughter has exquisite taste Dave, Flounder are delicious. I suppose with your local knowledge and experience you know that you can get fish somewhere. Probably the moon cycle is more significant to someone who doesn't have your experience and local knowledge. bn

My grand daughter likes flathead and whiting, filleted and crumbed, but when she tasted the flounder, it was more flounder, nothing else. 😂 The moon has it's functions for earth, but not my fishing. 🤣 1
