garfield28 Posted November 4 Posted November 4 Hi all, Been a long time since I've been on mainly due to not having my boat going for the last 3 years. Looking at a 2016 Stacer 489 Baymaster that has a 90 ETEC with low hours, and just wondering what they're like if anyone owns one or knows much about them please. I like my offshore fishing so are they any good in a bit of slop or only good to get out close on a reasonable or immaculate day? I have a savage escort 5.2SF it's a glass boat and is brilliant outside but it isn't the best for fishing in estuaries or getting in close to target flatties or drop crab pots, and worse of all its big and heavy with is a challenge for launching and retrieving on my own, so looking to downsize but would like a versatile boat where possible to do a bit of everything. I have also read in the past that Stacers are known to be worse with corrosion issues. Any info much appreciated. Thanks Geoff 1
noelm Posted November 4 Posted November 4 (edited) Stacer of that vintage is built by Telwater, who make Quintrex and Savage, no problems with corrosion (well no more than any other boat) they go OK, no real bad issues, they are reasonably light, so do bounce around a bit, but, driven to suit the conditions, you will have no problems. The e-tec will attract mixed reactions, most hate them, even if they never owned one, remember the company (BRP) has stopped making them some time ago, lots of places won’t take them for repairs or service these days, so keep that in mind. edit…….just an after thought, make sure it’s on a decent sized trailer, lots of those were “package deal” boats, and the dealers cut corners in every place they could, and fitting a smaller trailer saved quite a lot of cash. Thanks Noelm. The trailer actually looks good, it is one of the I-beam aluminum trailers with the drive on/off setup.
frankS Posted November 4 Posted November 4 Hi Geoff I recently sold the Savage Scorpion 485 it also had a 90hp etec on the back. Boat was brilliant in rivers and bays lakes etc and just fishable off shore, only ever had 2 persons on it and it would be hard going out in the brinie with more than 2 aboard. It was actually over powered with the 90 so hardly ever had to use more than about half throttle. Also didn't like the short chop so you had to either fly over the chop at speed OR go displacement speed and alloy extra time to get to your spot. Frank 1
frankS Posted November 5 Posted November 5 Also Geoff. Check with the last service report on the Etec and see if it is tuned to the 100 oil and if not get it tuned to run the 100. the motor will be fine if tuned to the 50 oil but will cost a fortune to run. they are very economic on the 100. Frank Thanks for the info Frank Is that a different type of oil? I've never had an ETEC before or know anyone who has so I wouldn't know what the 50 and 100 is. hope you're well mate. noelm Posted November 5 Posted November 5 (edited) There is two types of (expensive) Evinrude brand name oil, XD50, and XD100, the 50 is cheaper and similar to “old” two stroke outboard oil, and that setting to the EMM (done by a dealer) uses more oil, the XD100, is more expensive, but uses less and burns cleaner., that’s about it in home handyman terms. edit….have you bought the boat, or looking? Thanks for that Noelm. Just looking at the moment. 1
noelm Posted November 5 Posted November 5 I don’t want to start a brand war, or turn anyone off, but, me personally, unless the boat was a great deal, I would (these days) keep looking, but that’s just me. I wouldn’t (once again, these days) own an e-tec, a Mercury Optimax or a Yamaha HPDI, even though there is lots out there happily running around. People who will look after them (that know what they are doing) are getting scarce now, and none of those motors have been made for years. Steel capped boots on, hard hat tight…….. 1
Marky mark Posted November 14 Posted November 14 I'm hearing you Noel, I turned down a few second hand boats with etecs and eventually gave up and bought new to get a Yamaha, its not the brand so much but high pressure direct injection two strokes are a great idea but fussy with oil and fuel quality and when things go wrong it tends to be very wrong, lean condition especially being an etec favourite. Biggest issue now is parts and service locally will be more and more of an issue with time. Nothing too wrong with a Stacer hull but be ready to bash around a fair bit and slow down compared to your current rig, the ride will be a fair bit worse. Maybe consider a cc, at least then you are a bit further back and standing up more easily?
