So a week ago my fishing buddy and I bagged 9 flounder and 2 flathead around the mouth of Middle Harbour Sydney. We were back at it again today and finished with 4 nice flounder and 5 bluespot flathead. All bar 1 flounder were caught drifting using squid strips mullet  or prawns. The highlight for me was catching the biggest flounder on a large Zerev Fishtrap vibe. I was bored with the drifting so decided to put my lessons from Derek D to good use on the front of the boat and it payed off.

Well done Rob. You’ve got those flounder dialed in with consistent catches 💪.  Out of interest were you using a paternoster rig on the drift?

cheers Zoran

ps - it was a pleasure to meet you the other day.

Hi Zoran
It was likewise great to meet you and Maria. The reel covers are already being put to good use!

We just use a simple running bean or ball sinker onto a swivel with a trace of about 400-600mm (although they get shorter at times due to cutting off hooks rather than trying to extract them as we like to keep the catch alive till we are ready top clean them). A single hook - either a 2/0 suicide style or a 3/0 semi-long shank. to finish it off.  I have never gotten into paternoster rigs, although I must develop the skill of tying them.

The water we drift in is only between 5 and 10 metres.

As a lot of the fish have been in roe, I suspect that they may be around in numbers for breeding and this is why we have been so successful in catching them. Personally I prefer eating flathead, but have a good recipe for flounder from my fishing buddies French wife.

Anytime you want to try fishing "low tech" you are welcome to join me.

Cheers
Robbo

Nice work Robbo, was this on a run out tide? I often drive past that area and think there's a fair bit of water running out!

Mostly I find the wind is the dominant factor in drifting there rather than the tidal flow
