Greg Foster Posted November 9 Posted November 9 Hi all while my Shakespeare 2700 is getting fixed I was looking at a used Shimano fb2500 with a 5,10 ugly stick at pawn brokers $79 or new Shimano fx 2500 with a silstar power tip $99 at tackle shop any opinions / pros and cons thanks Greg
sashkello Posted November 9 Posted November 9 First one is a freshwater reel from the info online. I wouldn't buy it used... Second combo is possibly the cheapest you can go, you get what you pay for. I don't think there's much to discuss about <$100 combos, they are what they are and are still usable if it's from a reputable brand, but none of them are excellent.
Greg Foster Posted November 9 Author Posted November 9 Thanks sashkello I think I will get a decent rod when the Shakespeare is fixed and leave it at that you are right , you do get what you pay for
Greg Foster Posted November 12 Author Posted November 12 ok, I have bitten the bullet and am going to purchase a Sedona 2500 I was going to match it with a katana rod but they are discontinued Can anyone recommend a good rod to match this reel it will be used in the lake on my boat 4.2 m runabout ,probably using mono as I have never used braid thanks greg
sashkello Posted November 12 Posted November 12 Are you going to use it for casting or just to hang bait off the boat? If for bait, then any short sturdy rod will do, especially with that reel. If for casting, then I like Raider rods, bought 2 of them - much lighter than Catanas and just pleasure to handle. People here will recommend Arrowz I'm sure, they are popular for a reason, but I kind of found them to be too sensitive, maybe I just haven't grown to that level yet... And yeah, you gotta use braid for casting, it makes big difference in terms of distance... but for a boat probably not going to be super-important. 3
big Neil Posted November 12 Posted November 12 Good advice from sashkello. Only thing I would add is to get a rod suited to catching the target species. For example a 2-4kg will be no good for 60kg Murray Cod nor would a 4-8kg rod be ideal for catching Redfin. bn 2

Greg Foster Posted November 13 Author Posted November 13 Adding to my last reply Sedona and rod around $200 or <retailer removed> can do a Sienna and rod for $99 Buy 2 (set one up for Braid and Lure and the other for floor and bait )
