Headed out into the Hacking in the new yak for the turn of the tide this morning. Pumped some nippers and score a cracking whiting at 46cm while I was pumping, then another nice one on the drift just short before the southerly hit at 10:30am. Caught a few undersized flounder, bream, tarwhine and flathead before battling the southerly buster back to the ramp. Filleted the fish this arvo for at least a feed.

46cm is a cracker of a Whiting. Nice bag altogether. That southerly came up harder and earlier than predicted.

Very nice Rob, a couple of good sized whiting there. They usually fight well on light gear at that size.

You just beat me, the best I have pulled out was 45.5cm. Some of the old timers wished sand whiting would grow to 10 pound. 😂

Someone posted a photo a while ago, of a friend who pulled up a king george whiting at 88cm. Now that would be buzz on 6 pound line.

Lovely feed there Rob.

@Yowie I suspect if whiting grew to 10lb and bigger, no one would travel overseas to chase bonefish!

I guess not. I have read a couple of stories, years ago, of a couple of bonefish being caught in Australia, but don't know how true that may be.

Yep, I got caught out thinking it would hit about midday, slow trip back to the ramp!

That Southerly was a cracker and so are those white fillets.

Thanks Basil!

Thanks Yowie, It's my best in the past few years and if wasn't for the southerly I may have nabbed a couple more! I did get one at 51cm on a live prawn about 25 years ago fishing at Gunnamatta, I'd love to find the pic!

Big whiting! While pumping and stirring up the sand is always a good time to put a line out.

Yeah that southerly came up early - started to blow around 9am.

a top feed there Rob!

Any over the 50 mark are trophy fish. One fisho told me of a 52cm one from Como, and Restyle (William) told me of a 56cm one from Geroges River.

I got mine on 6lb blackfish gear and I thought it was a soapy until I beached it😜

Those are quality fish, especially from a yak! I guess the stealth factor is an advantage in Port Hacking,. I have read that fish can go crazy just before a southerly and Ive experienced it myself once or twice. Once sitting on Ramsgate beach watching a storm approach in the distance. As it got closer all 4 rods went off at once, but it went quiet as soon as the storm passed through. The downside is you are usually in for a soaking and when theres any lightning its definitely time to make a fast exit. As always with fishing, its totally unpredictable and a southerly is no guarantee of any fish. Not all southerlies are made equal?
