Yowie Posted November 12 Posted November 12 Headed out early this morning to the deep water near Lilli Pilli for something different. First cast was the tailor, only around the 33cm mark. Just as I was lifting it on board, it bit off the 2 ganged hooks and fell into the boat, so kept it. After that it was wall to wall reddies, no bigger than 25cm, taking every bait I threw over. Had enough of that so moved to Maianbar flats. The tide was running out, which I don't normally fish over the flats, but pumped some nippers and whiting started biting. 3 not much over size, and many more just under. No decent ones at all. Time to move as the water level was dropping. Tried a drift for nothing, then as I was drifting off the sand bank, I saw a patch of weed that looked like a flattie spot. Lobbed out the last cast with a nipper, left it for a few seconds then lifted away. By this time the flattie had the hook in it's stomach. A spirited performance by the flattie, at 58cm, so headed home. When cleaned, the flattie has a big lump in it's stomach, which turned out to be several long strands of ribbon weed - a bit unusual for a flattie. 17
Little_Flatty Posted November 12 Posted November 12 Nice flatty there Dave. Always interesting to see what fish are eating. I wonder if the flatty was trying to eat critters living in the weed, or the ribbon weed itself. I’ve caught three bream on green weed in the past few months. Enough to show it’s not an isolated case.

Don't know if accidental, or intentional, to swallow the weed. Nothing else in the stomach. Edited November 12 by Yowie 2
Isaac Ct Posted November 12 Posted November 12 Well done Dave, very good feed there. Good to see consistent good catches.
jenno64 Posted November 12 Posted November 12 Maybe the flatty ordered a salad one day? Nice catch Dave, that flatty will yield a good-sized meal and the other fillets will make another! 1
Larkin Posted November 13 Posted November 13 Nice catch Dave! Haven’t heard of many reddies of size being caught this season from inside. A bit of work finding the fish, but you pulled off a good feed! 👌

Skinned and boned the flattie fillets, then cut into pieces in a curry. Whiting fillets coming up soon.
