Fishing mate wanted to go fishing, so we headed out into Bate Bay yesterday arvo in his boat. The plan was to anchor near the bombie, but the swell was a bit bouncy, with the wind at an angle to it, so it would have been uncomfortable in his boat (his boat swings a bit on anchor and bounces more because of the size)

Headed to the inside of the Merries, not much swell in there but still wind. Burleyed away and red rock cod on the bite. Pulled about a dozen, some big enough to fillet, down to 12cm long, surprising what they can fit into their mouths. All released. Also Maori wrasse about of a good size.

Yakkas and slimies turned up, so used a few of them as fillets. Pulled up the bonnie and smaller reddie, mate pulled the larger reddie at 39cm. With the last light in the sky, a few tailor showed up, not big ones. Kept one each and released a couple more.

I saw the thunderstorm down Wollongong way, so a quick decision made to pack up and head home. Motored as far as Lilli Pilli then the sky fell in. Heavy rain, wind and lightning. The advantage of a 25 foot cruiser with a large cabin. The lightning was illuminating the inside of the cabin. Saw a few open runabouts getting soaked.

Not a lot of fish, but plenty of entertainment for the time, anyway, still have some fish from Tuesday's effort.

Mr consistency strikes again! Well done Dave. Glad you got home safely in the storm.

Thank you Mike. As we made the decision to pack up and head home, we saw an open tinny, way out past us, heading for shore at speed. Probably saw the lightning and decided to pull the pin, a good decision, as the storm produces squally winds.

No rain when I was out Tuesday morning, though I could see rain around me.

Nice session Yowie!

you made the most of the conditions and scored some different fillets. Nice work avoiding the storm too!

Thanks Rob. Could have added a few red rocky fillets as well, but already had some fillets at home.

Interesting report and a couple of nice fish.

Just before the storms hit I find the fish go into a feeding frenzy.

I get some really good snapper when that happens .

hope you didnt get to wet

A couple of decent reddies! 👍

better sitting in a cabin under cover than in an open tinny when the weather changes.

I always get plenty of the red rockies around the northern end of bate bay too. Must be heaps up there.

Only wanted a couple of fish each to take home.

Have found that a southerly buster up river can bring on a few fish, and we did not get wet.

Better than nothing.

Must be a lot of red rockies that way, as we were anchored and only dropping straight down under the boat.
