noelm Posted November 15 Posted November 15 Braved the wind, (NE east blowing a gale before daylight) drizzling rain and old frozen bait to go for a crab this morning, had one set before we decided it was just too miserable, but got 8 good ones, lots of females with eggs, very late for that here, usually by November the egg laden crabs are long gone (where ever they go) anyway, had hot crab for breakfast, and going to have crab sandwich for lunch, no photos, too wet and miserable…… 13
noelm Posted November 15 Author Posted November 15 (edited) Just to add, it was miserable because I forgot my rain coat, and had to use one of those disposable poncho things, (I keep a few of them in the boat) they work OK, but…..not in the wind, driving a boat and pulling crab pots! The stupid thing spent more time up over my head than it did covering me from the rain, I was wet before we left the ramp, then I sat on the wet boat seat. I reckon I looked like a dog wearing one of those plastic funnel collar things, most times the poncho was upside down, with just the hood bit stuck around my head. Edited November 15 by noelm 5
Yowie Posted November 16 Posted November 16 You had a go, pulled a few crabs. Better than a wet arse and nothing to take home. 😂 1 1
Green Hornet Posted November 16 Posted November 16 Nice going and once you’re home and dry, a good feed of crabs has got to be worth it. Funny you had rain. As the crow flies, we’re not much further down the coast here and it’s been sunny all day.
noelm Posted November 16 Author Posted November 16 (edited) From about 3AM it’s was raining, until about 9AM (when I got home, washed the boat and put it away) but the wind was howling from the north east, if I hadn’t promised to take someone out I would have stayed home….we got 6 real good ones, and 2 easy legals, no small ones at all, but (guessing) a dozen big females all full of eggs, all let go of course. If it was either windy or raining I might have stayed, but both……nah. Whiting and Flathead frames for bait, really old ones out of the freezer, and used lift nets, only had one run, so probably only an hour total crabbing. Edited November 16 by noelm 1

I have to get a new gas hose for my crab cooker, doing it on the stove gets old real quick…..I like to cook them all at once.
noelm Posted November 16 Author Posted November 16 Jesus, here it is, 8PM and the NE wind has not let up, might be stronger now if anything.

I was born there and grew up fishing in my primary school years before if became too rough an environment and dad decided to retire. 1

Going on a cruise, Conflict Island, Kirawinna, Rabaul and Alotau was there last year too, great diving, had a fish with some locals, very primitive fishing, but the locals are very friendly, except in Rabaul…….and Alotau is not much better. We will take lots of simple fishing gear and sets of dive gear to give to the kids on Conflict Islands and Kirawinna, plus some footballs to give away. edit…..the footballs might sound kind of strange, but, last year when we went there was some young guys on the ship, and they had a rugby league ball (why I don’t know) but they took it to the beach at Conflict Island and the young locals waited in line to just catch the ball, and played most of the day on the beach.
