Hill373737 Posted November 27 Posted November 27 4 more sleeps to go to start of cod season - unfortunately there is a fair bit of rain forecast here in Tamworth for the next few days so it may take the edge of day 1. My current plan is to hit my favourite section of water in the kayak, its about 90 minutes of effort to get there so will be on the water about 5am but it has consistently produced the biggest fish I've come across in the river. To fine tune my mental preparation for the cod grind, I've decided to head down the road to Glenbawn tomorrow for some bass torture - perfect preparation I reckon. Anyway, to get everyone primed for the season, I thought I'd share a few Murray Cod from the past month, my wife and I followed the Murray River from Albury to where it hits the ocean near Goolwa , SA. This one was found lurking near Albury! Next one I came across was in Tocumwal. The cod around Swan Hill are in prime condition .... Around Mannum, the cod are bigger enough to boof a paddle steamer!! ... and here's an 80 model from end of last season, which is why I'm pumped for December 1 to roll around! cheers Hilly 15
R E G I C Y C L E Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Some giant cod there 😉 That would have been a nice road trip with plenty of varied scenery! Unfortunately the central west is copping up to 80mm of rain in the 2 days before cod opening, so the rivers will be in no state to fish for at least a week 😢 1 1

Can't wait myself either, having caught the cod bug after that recent expedition in Victoria... Gonna try a nearby dam I know has cod in it first up, maybe head further abroad later on in December. 1

Where are you based @jaybez let me know if you might make it up Tamworth way, I'd be happy to get you out for a fish up here? 1
rickmarlin62 Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Im hoping hit the river during dec or over the break then do some exploring for trout up near niangla or somewhere down south is dead 2
mrsswordfisherman Posted November 27 Posted November 27 @Hill373737 a report from Glenbawn would be great. Been a fair few years since we went there. It was THE place to go when Sandra and Denis owned the kiosk. 1

Thanks @Hill373737. Down in Goulburn so its a fair hike up to Tamworth! Thanks for the offer anyhow... 1
Hill373737 Posted November 29 Author Posted November 29 Yeah, Goulburn would be a fair hike to Tamworth. I've got a mate with a bush block at Curraweela and he's been trying to get my down there, any suggestions for fishing in that area?

The closest spot I know has fish near there is the tarlo river which I've posted reports of on here before - rainbow and brown trout... I've never properly tried the Abercrombie there, it would certainly have plenty of carp, and possibly some cod. I've never really looked at that area properly though. 1
Hill373737 Posted November 29 Author Posted November 29 Cool, thanks for that, I'll search the Tarlo reports.
Ganguddy Goodoo Posted November 29 Posted November 29 Nice. My uncle helped build the original big trout at Adaminaby. First day of cod season and I'm working. Bidgee might be a bit high for the kayak anyway. 2

Oberon is under an hour from Curraweela, happy to help with trout spots there. From memory there is a few stocked streams closer... check the DPI stocking map. Canberra is under 2 hours if you're wanting to use your cod expertise. I haven't had much success around there (not for lack of trying) but @Ganguddy Goodoo may be able to help with some tips for the area. 1

Thanks mate, when I get there sometime in the new year, I'll also definitely be pinging a few Raiders in the area for ideas.

The level of the Peel is slowly creeping up today, it was already fairly low so unless we get a big dump this afternoon, it should be good to fish tomorrow!! Getting to my launch spot might be tricky though, there's a couple of kms of track that turns to slippery, sticky mud as soon as it rains.
