CAPTAIN HADDOCK Posted November 28 Posted November 28 Gday fish heads its finally Friday! Im in the market for a new overhead, last one was a penn 340 gt 2, i know, rubbish reel that seized up on me within a week - plastic internals and no sand/salt has touched it. Is the tld 30a 2 speed much different to the standard tld internally? the standard tld just looks a bit cheap as they do cheap combo deals on them and am afraid they are similar to my penn. Is the difference between the 2 speed tld reel and the tyrnos just the body with same internals? Burnt my fingers with buying that cheap Penn, be good if someone has put any of these through hell. Planning on using this for small to mid size sharks and kings although i cant help it if a 5m great white takes the bait!😄 line capacity is a must for paddle outs through the surf. cheers.
PaddyT Posted November 29 Posted November 29 Braid or mono-caught plenty of marlin using TLD's but then again i fish line class and "normal" drag settings (1/3 of line breaking strain) . If you are planning on abusing the reel then just go straight to a Tiagra 1
slowjigger Posted November 29 Posted November 29 The Tyrnos has a metal frame so should be more durable than the graphite TLD.
Hoods Posted November 29 Posted November 29 Agree. I have a Tyros 20 it is almost indestructible but more importantly it has a gear ratio of 5:1 compared to the TLD which from memory is a pissy 3.5:1. Cannot comment on internal as I have never had to pull the Tyrnos apart in over 15 years. I do not see the value in the tld's compared to the Tyros for an extra couple of dollars. The faster speed is really useful on mackeral & tuna & even Marlin up here. The TLD is far too slow. Internal engineering aside. Good Luck.
slothparade Posted November 29 Posted November 29 I also enjoy targeting sharks land based haha so been through all of this. I found the 30 size just to be a bit small, by the time you get your 100m backing, 600m braid them 100m leader, your out of space and will easily get spooled. Id be going a 50w as a minimum, I find I'm that size you have about 1km of braid and rarely get spooled haha. My 2 big combos are a Penn squall 50vsw and a tiagra 50. Both have stopped every shark no problem. I looked into the tld 30a vs the tyrnos. The tld under absolute extreme condition the housing can fail, but that's 1/mill. The 50a tyrnos is a bit of an odd ball, it's at the price where you start to consider the tiagra. In saying all of this, id be going the tld over the trynos, mainly just on price. Set your drag on land by hooking up to a tree and lean back until you can support your weight on full drag.
James Clain Posted November 29 Posted November 29 Ive got a tyrnos. very nice reel. Honestly, if you are a serious fisho. It's my opinion to always go with the best that you can comfortably afford. The higher end gear will last time and take a beating when you repeatedly catch fish. Its also much more of a pleasure to use. If you don't plan on getting out that much then a TLD is fine. Can still handle almost anything like what @PaddyT said he has caught lots of marlin.
CAPTAIN HADDOCK Posted December 1 Author Posted December 1 (edited) Thanks all, i ended up with tyrnos. Put 800m of 50lb braid then 100m 50lb topshot, was pretty impressed with the capacity, may even remove the topshot and add some more braid to get 1km of line if i have problems with spooling. As far as paddling out 500m and having 400m left do you reckon that is enough for the average blacktip/ bronzie or bully? As hoods said i felt the tld not worth it just for the 2 speed and about 20 buks difference, i fish every weekend and im abit harsh on gear. This is not only used for sharks, i thought the 30 felt good for using it from the yak for kings, btw who here finds sydney waaay overfished? I feel its declined bigtime from 5ish years ago. Appreciate all the help. Edited December 2 by CAPTAIN HADDOCK Keeping locals happy by not advertising spots
CAPTAIN HADDOCK Posted December 1 Author Posted December 1 Although overfished i know pelagics dont matter as they are not resident fish and blow through like missiles.

Planning on heading up to coffs if anyone from up there? Appreciate all the help. Nice setup, will be able to stop a decent amount of sharks. Just being a little picky, I would go 50m of top shot but 100lbs or even 120lbs. The top shot is extremely important, to protect the braid. A lot of sharks will roll on the line, even with 3m of steel leader, they will roll on your mono, the mono will survive their rough skin but will need to be changed every couple of sessions. 500m out is pretty far, probably a lot further than you need. Sharks tend to sit just behind the furthest sand bar waiting for food to be washed over. A 30w on a yak for kings, just be really really careful of your drag, I got towed around by a king when using my shark setup even on extremely light drag. I've since gone back to spinning reels off the yak for kings. Also found a bug overhead is to difficult to manage off a yak. I potentially will be in Coffs December/ Jan depending on situation goes.
savit Posted December 1 Posted December 1 1Kg+ reel (30) from kayak? I find even TLD25(700g) is not much comfortable. Though prefer overheads for kingies from kayak - much easier to adjust the drag during the fight (depending who faster gets tired😆) , and less stress on arm as the reel is on top.
CAPTAIN HADDOCK Posted December 2 Author Posted December 2 Yeh ok interesting, i thought the 3m of steel would have been plenty, good to know. Those overheads sure can burn your forearms hahaha. Will take all these tips onboard.
