Hi everyone,

I was about to buy a veritas until it sold out and now I'm looking for cheap rods again :(

On a fishing shop now I see a savage gear squad rod for only 49 dollars. its a great bargain but does anyone have one of these? Planning to get one on satimage.thumb.png.37d8d321d98a3ab6a871935cfde1aeff.pngs

The only hesitation I have with buying carbon fibre fishing rods is that they all have a casting weight limit.

If used for bait fishing it is easy to exceed that limit and snap the rod.

If used for lure fishing try and find out the limit ,Could be anything from 7 to 14 grams.

Bait fishing buy a composite rod with a clear tip.( Howald Process.)   Ugly stick or silstar crystal tip Even department store cheepies.

A few years ago I bought rod n reel combos for my grandkids for $39. 5'6'' and indestructible!   Still have them. Later I bought them longer 7' rods the same, But the runners rusted and fell apart !

looks like a deal, but at the same time there's no stock anywhere near me and the only size left is 1-2kg, meaning snapped by me on the first cast XD

yes, thats how i snapped my old graphite rod, but with proper technique eg not putting all the bend at the tip I think the pros of sensitivity/casting is way better than durability. I primarily lure fish nowadays caus its way more fun. Howald process is awesome but the rods are too heavy for light bream/flathead fishing, but normal composites like the abu garcia rayrex is very good. I'll try see for lighter options!

I use short Uglies for bait and lures. I choose rod rating a level up to make sure the tip is stiff enough for lure casting as they have slow recovery.

More expensive Uglies have better/Fuji guides and lighter composite or even pure graphite bottom part.

Yes, a bit of weight, no finesse/sensitivity, however the rod does not give up to kingies in a rodholder - when you are busy with another fish on a line.

im looking for a bream and flatty type stick, so sensitivity is important

Graphite then.

Mate, just visit couple of actual stores, and check and compare how the actual Savage or other rods feel in hand,  rather than "fishing" for rod online. Stock for clearance and sale items  is often not up to date.

You may still find 'old' Abu rods there for $65 though mostly baitcaster/overheads left on shelves. I think Samaki 2-4kg is currently still sold with tshirt for $40 at big blue shops, and Daiwa 2-4kg (forgot the model name) are regularly  on clearance for $50 as well as odd Catanas can be found for $50 at big orange shops.

I just got a 2-4kg savage gear rod for 50 bucks (Black Friday sale) just now. Snapped my other one and didn’t have much of a budget so this looked perfect. Yet to try it out though

It feels nice. Some of my mates have $200+ rods like zodias, Td black etc so obviously can’t compare it to that but feels decent for the price. Yet to try to actually try it out tho
