  1. bad luck about the fish mate... unfortunately these things happen... I once caught some fish, cleaned them and took them home. I layed them out in the driveway to take a photo.. my dog (german shepherd) ran up and took the biggest one and started eating it! Wouldn't let me take it back either!
  2. thats a good 3-4kg carp there! I'm interested to find out how they target them over there? do they use bread and corn like we do here?? Chris
  3. Thats a horse of a bream there!! Look at how nicely conditioned it is too. Chris
  4. But really, that is so typical of em.. Every run in I've had with them has proved that they think they own the river. I used to go wading down at Figtree bridge; I will ALWAYS get out of the water when I see them coming. Unfortunately, a fisherman wading in water isn't as fast as a scull at full speed, I've had a near miss with a scull being aimed at me, and another with oars narrowly missing my head! Dunno why they're like that that.. the rivers are there to be shared.
  5. nah mate, no fishing for me tonight, i got a few things I have to do tomorrow.. let me know how u go tonight.
  6. Thanks everyone for the congrats... almost 24hrs now after the capture and I'm still excited! I'll never forget the sound of the Baitrunner spinning faster than its ever spun before as the Jew took the first run. And also thanks to Alberto (Albert), Outfisher (Jason), Jewhunter (Grant) and JewGaffer (Byron) for your PMs giving me hints and tips.. they all helped me to catch this fish. Now... I just need to repeat this feat! Hey Kamil, have u been fishing lately??
  7. Just thought I'd type this up before I hit the sack. Having been two weeks since I last wet a line, I was really itching to go for a fish... Sitting in the office after lunch I started getting a nasty headache... must be coming down with the flu.... bugga... I really wasn't feeling that well; but I also wanted to get out and continue my search for that elusive Jew. I sent an SMS to Pacemode (Jim) seeing if he was up for a fish... he replied saying he was crook but would get back to me later. Come 7pm, I got a call from Jim.. we'd give it a shot and try our luck. We got down to our river location at around 9:30pm. The squid that we caught earlier was stripped and cast out. Within 5 minutes, before we were even able to cast out our 3rd and 4th rods, Jim got a run. The fish didn't hook up though and the rod in its place while we continued to rig up. With 4 baits in the water and high tide fast approaching, the action seemed slow. near the top of the tide, Jim started getting some knocks on his bait... "Bream" he said... after about 5 minutes of sustained nibbling, an attempt was made to hook the fish. Jim waited... and then struck... he hooked up... it felt very much like a dead weight and it was called for a flatty... guess what came up??? Not one Bream, but TWO! we were fishing two hook rigs, one had hooked onto the top and the other onto the bottom hook! The bream were returned to the water and the rod re baited and cast out. . . . . By 11:30 things were looking very quiet... as both of us felt crook we called it a night and started to pack up. At around 11:45 (we were taking our time packing up). The the glowstick on the tip of my Snyder Glas dipped down and I heard the beautiful sound of my Baitrunner letting out line. Whatever it was took my bait and went on a small run. My heart pounded as I ran over to my rod; but by the time I had gotten there, the run had ended and I was too late.... "Dammit" I thought. I felt dejected walking back ... I continued packing..... but about 30seconds later I once again heard the glorious sound of my baitrunner letting out line at a really fast rate. This run was much quicker than the previous.. and it didnt stop... I ran to my rod, engaged the gear and struck... I'M ON! I could feel the weight of a decent fish, and the headshakes confirmed it was the fish that I've been trying so hard to catch. I was fishing 4kg of drag and the fish didn't take long to tire, only going for a few short runs..... I've had my 8w rod for a while now, but this was the first time I have seen it loaded up. After about a minute of fighting, I saw it.... Silver! Long! JEWIE!!! I brought the fish to the shore and Jim landed it. WOO HOOO! after years and years of shorebashing around Sydney, I finally landed one!! The fished measured 94cm and a tad under 7kg... I'll round it up and call it 7kg!! Jim, THANK YOU THANK YOU for helping me catch this amazing fish; I've been pulling my hair out for years trying to get em... Here is a picture... unfortunately it was taken with my crappy mobile phone camera. It was AWESOME! and I'm still buzzing! Sorry, this isn't really much of a report as I haven't mentioned any specific locations.. hope you guys understand
  8. Interesting guys.. I wouldn't have thought it was a jewie cos this fish was so fast.. but it did have a purple tinge... Then again it did hit the squid jig like a T. Wouldn't it be funny if it was a jew and I hooked it?!
  9. It wasn't a tailor. As I could clearly see it had large scales.
  10. The other night I was jigging for squid along a floating platform at a marina. I was on the phone so my squid jig was just dangling in the water about 2ft deep. I was looking down and then suddenly a long silver fish dashed out from under the platform, smashed my jig and then dashed back under! I was so shocked! Here is my description of the fish, I don't know what it was cos it was so fast that I couldn't see it properly. It was around 40cm long, silver. VERY fast! Had largish scales and looked like a whiting (not smooth skinned) and there was a slight purplish tinge as the light reflected off the fish. the jig I was using was an Orange Natural Yamashita 1.8 with Ultrabite. My guess is that it could have been a pike, but the smooth cloth on my jig was undamaged, and pike have really sharp teeth. My subsequent attempts to lure it out with a soft plastic failed. Any guesses as to what fish this could have been???

    Jigging Rods

What budget are you looking at? For the money I think you can't go past the Daiwa Saltist range, these are known as the Catalina in Japan and are a great rod. I got mine for $250 and it comes with TiSic guides too! Chris
  12. Really? awesome! I'm looking forward to my 1000lb jewie!!! Can't wait hehehe
  13. I do. Its good, you should try it. In winter it will keep your hands dry, and therefore much warmer than wet hands with the wind blowing on it. I'm also unfortunate enough to have really sensitive skin, so if I touch certain baits (squid is one), I get an allergic reaction and my fingers become really itchy. Chris
  14. I'm not dedicated mate.. I'm just INSANE!
  15. The missus has class on Monday nights so lately I've been flicking some squid jigs in the harbour while waiting to pick her up. I've been going for a few weeks now and haven't gotten any squid. But last night, while using my brand new Yamashita squid jig I managed to get 3 in about 2 hours of jigging! They were all around 6inchs long and would have made a great bait whole. I got home at 9pm and quickly checked the tides.. there was a low of around 10pm..... hmmm i thought.. one week before the new moon, run up tide around 11pm, freshly caught squid...... Lets do it! despite having to be at work at 9am this morning, having some fresh caught squid gave me enthusiasm to sacrifice sleep for a jewie. I got down to my usual Sydney harbour spot at 11pm.. Cast out both rods and waited. It was very quiet.. wound both baits in at 12 to check on em. One had the head missing, the other had a few chunks missing from pickers. Cast them back out and left them there till 1:30am. No action. Packed up at 1:30 and went home.. seemed to have some really small pickers as most of the squid was still on the hook... Drove home and got into bed around 3... slept a few hours and came into work......... now thinking about when I should do it again Chris
  16. I just read this twice and still don't understand it!

    Buying Waders

You can get the Kokoda PVC Stretch waders for around $40-$50. If you're an occasional wader, these will do the trick. I have a pair that have lasted me a few years, but I probably only use them a few times a year. If you will be using then very regularly, then perhaps you can get the more expensive Snowbee, or Hornes waders..These are higher quality but also cost many times more. Most tackle stores around should have the kokoda. Just look for the tackle stores that normally sell the cheaper rather than the high end gear. I think ***** will have em too. Chris edit: I don't know why my reference to a certain store above comes up at Astericks... but anyway, I was referring to a very very very common department chain store begining with "K"..
  18. The only problem is, even though you can rinse your reel/line in fresh water, the water only wets the braid on the surface and doesn't penetrate inside. I'm not sure what the solution is really, other than always checking the line for fraying. I spray my reels with Inox after rinsing it in fresh water and that doesn't seem to damage the line. With rinsing and spraying the reel with Inox, I've had braid that is a few years old and I haven't developed any problems with it. But then, I also haven't hooked any solid fish that have tested my gear. Chris p.s. Jim, I've sent you a couple of PM.
  19. Hey outfisher, nice catch! I sent you a PM last week. Did it come through to your inbox? Chris
  20. Nice meeting you Jim. Thanks for your tips.. hope it helps put me onto my first Jew! No good here either unfortunately. The wind started blowing not long after you left. I couldn't get any yakkas... they were biting but couldn't not get any to hook on. Could not get squid either. So, with no bait, I couldn't cast my big rods out. A couple of guys came down and they had caught 5 squid from the wharf before. I packed up, and went to two other wharves hoping to get some squid for the freezer.. I went home at 2.30am with nothing. Managed to hook 1 squid that came off after a second. I should have taken your advice and not used that crappy squid jig that you have too... I was looking at it and found the hooks on it were all loose! Chris
  21. is it too much to ask for a fish?... any fish will do!

    Knot Problems

Mariner, In my original post I explained why, and it is cos ever since I changed over to heavier braid, I have developed endless problems with the albright
  23. Thanks for the words of encouragement Jim. I'm definately doing a lot of thinking about it! Will continue to try and crack it. Chris
