  1. Hi All

I have registered for the National Fishing Challenge in support of Prostate Cancer Foundation on 19 April 2009.

I don't have a boat and would like to know if anyone has a spot on their boat for that day - I am very happy to chip in for fuel, food, bait etc., and will travel to pretty much any location to meet up with you, but am not all that familiar with boats so really couldn't assist with any of the technical stuff!! (Best for your own personal safety and that of the boat!!)

If anyone is heading out on 19 April and could accommodate, then I would be most appreciative.

    Regards

    Mike

  2. I will be trying to snag a couple of fish ( hopefully bream ) at h and c at 3pm till dark today if anyone is around. I'll be the one with the determined but frustrated look on my face, near the canal side of the bay.

    Hi Billy

Sorry I coudn't make it today ... looked like good conditions ... how did you go?

  3. :1happybday: Fishless. 39 today!

Hope you have a great day & that the year leading up to the big 40 is a fishy one.

    Cheers,

    Grant.

Thanks Grant ... I really appreciate the thought. Lately I have really been living up to my name, so I just hope that I can turn that around this year!!

  4. Hi All

Can anyone suggest any good land based fishing spots in the Pittwater area (either bait or SP's)???

I've read the article about Pittwater but was wondering if anyone has had any success in certain spots recently.

    Thanks

    Mike

  5. are there any beaches that hold worms around sydney?

ive never seen someone worming before, although i dont go beach fishing often :1prop:

I've been getting plenty at Mona Vale recently (big suckers too - they take 2 hands to pull out sometimes and reach a metre in length) ... used to go to Narrabeen but the sand flats have moved since they dredged Narrabeen Lake and dumped it there. It's now too steep (not enough run off) and really hard to get them there.

  6. Hope you have a speedy recovery Pete ... no doubt the docs will tell you "don't do anything strenuous for a while" ... well, hello ... that means some leisurely :1fishing1: , prescribed by the doctor!! How good is that!

Bugger of a way to get a "fishing prescription", but take the good with the bad mate.

    All the best mate

    Mike

  7. Good on you Mike. Glad to see the flatties up the back of the lake like that.

I have hard there are some monsters lurking up near there, so another session

might be in order for you.

Great that the SP's are doing the trick for you.

Once the old flatties head is out of the water, those head shakes can ruin your day.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

    Thanks Pete

Yep, a lesson well learnt!! :1prop:

Maybe we can catch up for a session together some time ... I live at Dee Why and can get out during the week if you're up for it.

    Cheers

  8. Hi All

I am pretty new to using soft plastics, and decided to go and practice in Deep Creek at Narrabeen Lake this afternoon. 3rd cast I was on, and as it got closer I could see it was a nice flatty of about 50cm ... in my excitement, I lifted the rod, the fish jumped out of the water, shook it's head, and said bye bye to my SP!!! Bugger!! :(:1badmood::ranting2:

Stayed on for another hour or two and walked up and down the creek (near the entrance) for just one more flatty of 35cm.

These SP things really work!! I'm hooked!!

  9. hi wayne

I was the other mug lugging all the gear i didn't need. There has to be a way to recognise fellow raiders- maybe a secret hand signal :1prop: i'm sure the mods can come up with something. It would have been good to have a longer chat

    billy

    ps

    thanks fishless!! my worming sensei

    Hi Billy

Thanks for a good day ... too bad the fish didn't co-operate!! I'm glad you got your first worm and I am happy that I could teach you the art!!

Look forward to another outing soon

    Mike

PS Will definitely have a longer chat next time Wayne

    Cheers

  10. Well Raiders, here's my last few weeks in a bundle.

We spent 8 days at Fingal Bay over the new year. The conditions tended to be really nice in the morning, but by 10.30am the NE was howling in. We launched at Shoal Bay, which is a fairly shallow ramp, especially at low tide. Beware the Eastern side of the ramp, as we saw many a sedan get unstuck trying to pull out quite small rigs. The ramp is about 2m too short, so to get your boat out at low tide, you sometimes need to get your rear wheels on the beach.

We took our 4.0m tinny outside a few times, but we mostly fished around Tomaree Head. We also fished out off Shark Bay and Shark Island. We tried the sand banks in the centre of the bay, as well as the Southern side of Yacaaba Head. We had the boat out every day, but alas we never got one keeper. Furthermore, we found that we were hardly even catching the same species twice. We got small Snapper, a myriad of wrasse type fish, as well as the smallest flathead I have ever seen. We trawled Lazer Pros all over the place, and did not even get a hit in 8 days. We tried squid, prawns and pilchards, for the same result. Speaking to others at the ramp, the luck seemed to be much the same all around. In the entire time, we never saw a single fish get cleaned. We even tried for whiting off the beach at Shoal Bay, and I managed a small fella that I tipped back in. We did see one bloke pull in a Gummy at Fingal Bay, spinning off the beach one evening, with a small metal slice. We also tried the plastics off the beach, and were just as unrewared. This was during the New Year period, over the full moon. I did catch up with one bloke at the camp round who picked up a bucket of Whiting pretty late on a very windy and ordinary evening, in front of the life saving club at Fingal Bay.

A word of warning to those venturing out around Shark Island and Shark Bay. The currents there are really crazy. We measured a 5 knot current on the GPS and once the wind got up over around 10knots from the NE, the seas was all over the place. The waves there seem to just spring up from under the surface, and lump up randomly. Although we were running a 40hp, we could hardly run at more than a crawl, because of the terrible sea there. We also shipped a lot of water trying to nose back in when the NE kicked in. The Maritime guys also came past and checked all our safety gear, so be prepared. I think it is a combination of the shallow rocky seabed, as we as the current and the wind, that really turn it into a bit of a washing machine. It reminded me of the sea of Point Perpendicular at Jervis Bay, close in. I would not advise going out there in anything less than 5.0m if there is any wind on the menu.

Last Friday I went out at Pittwater, and fished around Longnose Point and Morning Bay. We picked up heaps of baby Snapper and small arbitary species, but nothing to write home about. My 8 year old had a ball catch trumpeter with one of those Herring/Yakka jigs, so that was good. I was hoping he would get us a livey to throw out, but there was only Trumpeter and i have never given them a whorl as live bait, and did not bother. We also tried the moorings on the eastern side once the NE kicked in, but it was pretty quiet there.

Last night my wife and myself took a drive down to Narrabeen lakes and decided to toss a few plastics near the boat ramps on the Southern side. We spent about an hour there, and picked up a couple of flathead around the 34cm mark. We were using 2" black shad style plastics. All fish were released as we had already had dinner, and were just there for the fun of it.

This morning I went down to the beach at Dee Why, and threw in a few plastics. There was a bit of an annoying shore break, but i found some decent water a bit north of the life saving club. Tried for about an hour and a half, but didn't get any hits. I spoke to some guys who were chasing whiting but they also had nothing to report. The weed started to drift in a bit around 6.30am, so i packed it in.

Well that's that I guess. When a read of all the Kingys being caught lately I have really been wondering what we have been doing wrong. We will keep on trying.

    Cheers for the time being.

    Hi there MrChipsnSalad

I think I was one of the guys you spoke to this morning ... we had a go for a little while and then made a move to Narra Lake for zip also. There just seemed to be nothing around today.

Nice to meet a fellow raider.

    Regards

    Mike

  11. The place has been taken over by **********. Just like The Entrance. Shame

It certainly looked liked like a lot of the people there were "visitors" to the area. Never mind ... as long as they keep it clean and friendly then I don't have a problem.

The holidays are almost over and kids back to school so it should get a lot quieter ... especially mid week.

  12. Went for a fish at Narrabeen Lake (a.k.a. Pitt Street) this afternoon. Went and caught myself some beachworms from Narrabeen Beach this morning, and fished from 4pm until 9pm for 1 whiting (29cms) and 1 bream (27 cms). Caught another 3 whiting at around 20-22 cms (returned) and the usual 10 or so small bream and silver biddies.

A nice afternoon and a couple of fish for dinner!! Sorry, no pics.

    Cheers

    Mike

  13. Hey mate, great job !

Was the lagoon packed with people yesterday when you went ?

    Hi Guys

I was there too (probably about the same time - 6pm - 8pm) but on the other side of the bridge where everyone swims. Once a few of the families went home it thinned out and the fishos came in force!!

For me it was 2 legal whiting - first cast a 34cm and then a 31cm about 20 minutes later (sorry, no pics - already consumed!!). Fresh caught beach worms was the go.

The :wife: was getting bored and cold so it was time to go with plenty of bait still leftover, so might try again Sat morning or evening.

The previous day I also caught 4 whiting from 28cm to 35cm in length, so as Pete says, the lake is firing at the moment for whiting.

    Cheers

  14. Hi guy's.

I'm heading to Dee Why on Saturday for a beach fish. Can anyone tell me if the good old drag a piece of rotten meat over the worm holes and grab them as they come up method would work on that beach? Are there alot of beach worms on Dee Why beach or any of the northern beaches?

    Cheers.

    Mark

    Hi Mark

I live at Dee Why and have just come back from getting some beach worms on Narrabeen Beach - straight down from the little car park on the right just north of the fire station (across the road from the servo). There are heaps there, but it takes a little time (I am not the best at it!!).

Haven't tried at Dee Why Beach.

    Cheers

    Mike

  15. Fishinboy ... where do you live? If you are on or near the northern beaches then I could show you?? Like johblw said, it is an artform that takes good technique and a lot of practice!!

    Cheers

    Mike
