G’day Raiders,
Long time subscriber, first fishing post!
Set off for browns sunrise Saturday morning hunting YFT as decky for a mate in his seafarer Victory.
After a bumpy ride out we set a spread and started looking for cold temp breaks. The water was hovering around 20.5- 21 degrees South South West of Browns, after about 2hrs of the usual anticipation we were joined by a large pod of Dolphins that kept us and them I think entertained for a good twenty minutes. At this point we are following a current line north back to Browns and of course the Dolphins too!
All of a sudden bang off goes the short corner lure (15kg Rig set with 5kg for the strike), a cockroach Christmas tree! (Go the Blues) my mate grabs the other reels and im on! But then very quickly im off……Bugger. We reset the spread and start North wondering if it was a Dolphin and hopefully YFT and Dolphins Co-habitate. Then BANG again short corner goes off again, this time I make sure the hooks are buried and I we start playing.
Once I turned him he started dancing g across the water and our questions are answered a Winter Dolly!!! And its looks good. It gave us hard time at the but the Captain had him gaffed and in the boat, then we realised how big it was. 120cm to the fork in the tail and 20.5kg. Stoked first Mahi Mahi ever, its gonna be hard to top.
Had a great afternoon towing back to the 12 mile still scratching our heads about Dolphin Fish in July
Cheers Skip.
