  1. Joep, good on u for getting out for a flick, I got small flaties on blades last week around Como however none on plastics, what depth/ jighead were you using chasing Jews? Great size flaty for this time of year... She must of pounced in her sleep considering the fight!

Dave, sorry mate for pulling out, this sat for blacks AND flats?

Jeff, too dam cold for the JetSki crew, we can fish the river in the sun these days, I'm coming up to the bay in August, leave some fish for me!

Hey mate, 1/8 jighead I was fishing in 8-11m of water.

  2. yeah mate it also has the jogging feature with the MK doesn't. You can press left, right, back or forward and it will take you 5 feet in that direction. press it it twice and it will move you 10 feet etc, If you PM me I can point you in the right direction...

Thanks for the help man, appreciated. I'll give you a PM.

  3. Nice report joe! You didn't get your jew but still sounds like a productive session. It's definitely eerie being on a yak without much light. At least the jetskis weren't out there! Well done :)

    Cheers scratchie!!!

thanks scratchie, must have been too cold even for them! Not a single one the whole day.

That's the only thing I don't like about fishing from a kayak. A flathead getting loose and swinging it's spikey head near your jatz crackers !!

Apart from that, a good catch.

Haha it was a clsoe call, that flattie was on a mission. Thankfully it failed.

Great sesh there and some good fish! Great pic of the Echidna too!

    Thanks buddy.

  4. Awesome report mate. Georges has definitely been consistent this year, good bag there. I know the endless jew search, just gotta keep plugging! Might try tee up that session soon :)

Thanks mate. Sure thing let me know.

Well done bud, nice feed of bream there. Gotta love those Zmanz!

Thanks man, they are so convenient as well. 1 sp lasts me the whole session love it.

    Great report Joe.

When my fishing partner pulled out yesterday I made the decision that it was too bloody cold to be out sitting in a boat and here you are pedalling around in a yak.

    Dave

Haha when I was out there I was having second thoughts. Might need to invest in some good neoprene socks and gloves!

  5. Hi everyone,

So the plan this morning was to catch some mulloway and breambos in the georges river on Sps, inspired by Stewie's and crew recent success in the cooks. Launched the yak at around 630am and made my way to some deeper holes that I have sounded over the past 6months. I have caught a few small soapies here before but was hoping for a bigger specimen. I must say it was a tough morning on the feet and hands. Both were frozen, which made it difficult pedalling and casting but I got there in the end. Fog rising from the water gave it an eerie atmosphere which I took as a goood sign. Was using a squidgy paddle tail. Around 50 casts later nothing except a snag and I had to rerig which took me 15mins because my fingers were no longer working.

Sun had risen. I lost hope and changed over to targeting some breambos by casting at rocky drop-offs with zman grubs on 1/12 - 1/16. The george's has been very productive this season for bream and I caught 7 legal bream between 25 - 31 and a few undersize. Most were caught at the change of tide. Kept 3 for the table. Getting a bit sick of eating bream lol.

After getting a fix on catching some bream I decided to give the jewies another chance and started casting away at drop-offs with another paddle tail sp. First cast I'm snagged. But the snag is steadily coming to the yak like dead weight, no fight whatsoever. It surfaces and is a nice 65cm flattie (beats my previous pb on SP by 15cm). My lure was inhaled and on closer inspection I can see why there was no fight. She was deep gilled hooked and bleeding heavily so I cut my line but could not revive her. Chances of survival were not great so I decided to keep it for the table. Normally I would put fish into the keeper net over the kayak not the water but because she was lifeless I went to put her in over the side. She gave a good whack to my hand and swam off to freedom. Hope she survives. I continue casting and soon come up with another flattie at 44cm that had almost reached my nuts with it's head shakes.

While I took a toilet break. I noticed some rustling in the grass and spotted an echidna digging away. Been sometime since I have seen one in the georges national park.

So in the end it was a good session. That bigger mulloway still eludes me, so the journey continues.

    Cheers,

    Joe

  6. Thanks everyone for your advice. Now to decide between 80lb MK or MG...Looks like generally MK is a little bit more exp then MG. Any particular reason for that?

Motor Guide 80LB - 60" with GPS - far better value than the noisy Minn Kotas

Thanks mate. The Minn kotas also has GPS? I'm leaning toward the motor guide if as you say it's quieter (plus less damage on my wallet).

  7. Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for a good electric motor suitable for a quintrex 470 coastrunner. I mostly do my plastics and lure work in the yak but it's getting a bit cold for me feet haha.

    Cheers,

    Joe

  8. Great fish.....and great to see the salmon turning up. The salmon eaters v non-eaters debates will start up now!

I usually salt, marinade with something like sambal sauce and dry them to get a jerky consistency which goes well with rice. Occasionally steam them as well and don't have a problem with taste. May be it's just me.

Smoke um. Salt, brown sugar, 15 mins in a smoker, two slabs of fresh crusty bread, lashings of butter. Awesome.

If you smoke more than one makes for a great fish pie.

Great catch for an early start.

    Cheers

Sounds appetizing. I will give that a go for the next one.

  9. Hi all,

Had a day off work. Decided to change things up a bit and get some exercise while doing some landbased fishing instead of taking out the boat or yak. Managed to wake up at 430AM for once and fish sunrise. I was aiming for some flatties off the bonnievale/maianbar stretch. Was using prawn squidgy, zman grub and a metal spinner. Managed to catch a flatty on each. Alas, all three were undersize. Just when I was losing hope, something bigger with more fight takes the zman grub and goes for a little run. With no snags in the vicinity I was not worried. Ended up being a 52cm sambo, which was fun on 6lb. I actually went a couple weeks ago for a beach session at Garie targeting soem salmon but came up donuts; so it was good to make up for it today.

    Cheers,

    Joe

  10. You can give west head a go, fairly close to patonga. If you look it up on google maps satellite you can see where the weed beds are. In the little bay there is weed at the western and eastern ends you can give both sides a go but I find the eastern weed bed produces more for some reason. Has only really produced for me dawn and dusk. Good spot to collect livies as well. Let us know how it goes, goodluck!

  11. Top perch there joe

    Thanks Stewy!

    Very nice man!

Starting to enjoy the Georges, looks like it's producing well this winter! Keep it up.

Shoot me a message if you're keen for some company on the yak :)

Thanks mate. Yeah Georges has been very consistent this autumn/winter, when it's not muddy brown haha. Sure thing man i'll pm you.

Good catch. Do you worry about loosing tackle casting into oyster outcrops? And do you loose a lot. That tends to worry me so I don't get close enough.

I actually seldom ever lose tackle when using soft plastics and casting into the rocks. If I do hit a snag which doesn't happen very often I paddle to my jighead without applying any pressure on the line and gently jig it in the opposite direction to unhook it, that way I don't damage my leader or the jig. I find you actually have to cast very close to the structure, within half a meter from the rocks/shore/drop off to get good results. Most of the hookups were in the first and second twitches from the sp hitting the water, so the fish were holding in very close. I think you have to find somewhere where the depth drops quickly, i.e, I wouldn't be casting into rocky shallow water and retrieving through a minefield if that makes sense. Thanks Joe

  12. nice work if you don't mind me asking where you using the 2 and half inch z man grub on about a one twelfth jig head?

    thankyou regards tony

Hi Tony, was using 2 and a half inch z man grub on a 16th jig head but if strong current I do go up to a 12th but rarely need to where I'm fishing. Thanks Joe

  13. Hi all,

Went for a fish this morning in the Georges River at Lugarno in the yak. Alarm went off at 430am but alas I snoozed till 6. Probably a bit too optimistic setting the alarm for 430. On the water a bit late at around 6:30 and was fishing the runout. Fished with sps only used the zman grub and squidgy prawn a bit lazy today. The prawn outfished the grub today 9 - 3. Was casting toward rocky oyster ledges and drop-offs. Managed 9 legal bream between 26 - 32cm and a few smaller models, a small flattie and whiting and a PB perch that went 39cm. At first I thought I was on to a big bream, kept diving below the yak and almost lost it at one point when it tangled into the keeper bag. Kept 6 bream for the table. Looks like the water has cleared up now.

    Cheers,

    Joe

  14. Nice work joep.

I love the bay when there's lots of surface action, keeps you entertained for sure :sun:

I like the those for size perspective :whistling:

    Haha thanks buddy.

How was the water, is it cleaning up after the milkshake?

Upper Georges is still a bit dirty, wondering how the bay was faring.

Wow on the hairtail! What line and hook setup was it?

Hey amkr, sorry haven't been able to go fishing since due to work booo so don't know what the water is looking like. I was using 8pound mono main and 20pound leader to gang hooks with no sinker. Was going for tailor and the hairtail was a surprise catch.

  15. Congrats there Joe , nice Hairtail for Botany ! That's something I still need to cross off my Bucket list .

    Thanks 4myson. Real surprise catch!

Great catch there mate! With the hairtail about already it's looking pretty good for our July social then! :)

    Cheers scratchie!!!

Thanks Scratchie, i'll make sure to join this upcoming social!

  16. Nice catch there joe!!

    Thanks Mate.

Wow I've never heard of hairtail in Botany, and so early in the season too! Where abouts was he roughly if you don't mind? Don't need your secret GPS marks or anything just curious as to which part of the bay

Hi Linc, around the oil wharf. I think the lights were attracting all the bait fish. The tailor were full of yellowtail.

Congrats on the catch. The hair tail is a surprise!

Thanks man. Thought it was a double tailor hook up at first when I saw the flash of silver.

  17. Hi everyone,

Had a short night session at Botany Bay tonight. Was running late but was able to catch the turn of tide between 7-9PM. It was a little bit windy but managed 7 tailor between 35cm - 46cm, a flatty at 39cm, an octopus (smallish didn't measure they freak me out so straight back in he went) and a PB hairtail at 140cm. Got back in as it started to pour. Was using whole pilchards and the octopus was caught on a 3.0 yamashita natural red.

    Cheers,

    Joe

  18. Hi Tastee,

I also have an etec 60hp. Has been running smoothly for the past few years. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I do mine. Nice kingies btw I'm also on the hunt for my first legal as well. Not too sure about the drum exclusion zone, I've never fished them before and generally avoid them as I too don't know what area there is legal to fish. Sorry I couldn't be of much help.

    Joe
