Landbase is tuff at the moment. With nothing much biting except for salmon. But they are chasing white baits I believe. And if your lucky they will run into you. There are taylors at the break wall at night. But they are new spawns. So they are barely legal. Probably best to wait till summer.

It's cool mate. I'll be glad to share what I know. I'm still an amateur when it comes to fishing. From my past experience with the months calendar of squidding. Now is the quiet season. You will start to get bait size ones in safe sanctuary in about a couple of months. Then around summer you start to get alot of squid average size just about every where. And towards end of autumn and early winter is when you get bigger ones but less in numbers. So having said that. During our recent trips to the port. Was to focus around dusk and dawn. Knowingly we are after big ones and not numbers. All the hits was at the islands. And none at the break wall. We use paternoster rig with two jigs. The boat constantly moves up and down making the jigs looks very alive. Fishing around 15m of water. Drifting is better. But depends on winds and current. Spronge is probably better if your landbase and find it hard to cast a distance with the light jigs. But keep in mind that squids like weeds and corals. So if you let it sinks all the way to the bottom. You will loose it. A stainless steel hook and bamboo skewer is more ideally for that particular area. Hope that helps. Snag-King.

We only uses squid jigs now days. It's much quicker and cleaner to rig up. This is on boat btw. So usually each person has two rod if he chooses. And depending on wind, current, and water depth. One rod is usually rig up paternoster style sitting in the rod holder. While flicking with the other rod. To try and max out our chances. If you prefer to use the sprong instead. Try designing the sprong with a bamboo skewer. And stainless hooks. This option allows the bait to suspend mid water. And not sink all the way to the bottom and snags. I've had friends that bag out on squid with this technics land base. Goodluck. Snag-King.

It's been awhile since I last posted. Been a very busy year for all of us. But here is a quick report from team 'No Fish' on three consecutive week squidding at Port Kembla. 1st week: fished at dusk. Landed 8 2nd week: stayed overnight landed 16 3rd week: fished at dusk. Landed only 4 it was quite windy on the last trip. Overall we did manage to land 4 big green eyes over 1.2kg. The rest range from 400g - 900g. It's still decent size. Happy fishing. Sorry no pics. Snag-King.

Heya Dan. Nice reports. Hope to see more kingies turning up soon. And as for night fishing in winter. I think it's all about being a warm blooded person producing enough body heat. And having the right clothing. Personally I don't find it that cold here in Sydney during the nights. But with the rains, it can get very uncomfortable if you get wet. Hopefully the weather clears up soon. I'm itching to go squidding.

Para river is ok to eat. Just don't eat too much. But if you're paranoid then try not to eat fish that takes ages to grow or bottom feeders like big bream. I know guys that doesn't eat fish west of harbour bridge. Yet they smoke a pack a day.

Hey guys. Is hairtails a rare species? And are they good to eat. We've been up on the hawksburry a couple of times last year targeting jewies with no luck. But on one session we pulled up about half a dozen of those long snake look alike species. In which we threw back.

I've only been squidding for the past 6 months. So I'm still a beginner. But from experience I find that the pink yo-zuri 4.0 does the most damage from my collection. All my jigs glows. And I guess it helps on dark nights. If you have further questions please PM me. Thx

The best jig to use at any given time of day is a jig that looks like the bait fish in that area. But that can be difficult to find out especially at night. Try using pink or orange for night. And neutral colours for day. Also report of squidding around the gong is quiet for the past couple of weeks.

Heya Justin. Good to see the tailors are still around. I'm guessing they are decent size? I went squidding last night aswell. Ended up with 3 squids and one cuttlefish about 3 kg. Had to work hard for them.

Yeah around the warf you'd be happy to get half a dozen of decent size squid. Need to venture out to the rocks for bigger ones and more catches.

Congratz on the catch. It is just awesome when you come out with the plan. Executing it. And ends up catching the species you're targeting. Can't wait to see some pics. Bangus jr must be very happy. Im surprise you didn't give to the other guys to your left. And as for me. I wouldn't have taken that fish off you. 90% of my catch is usually given to family or friends. Even the last haul of squid. I'm just as happy as you are seeing the fish swim off. The thrill of catching a prize fish is only something us true fisho look forward too. Hope to see you guys around. Snag-King.

The question shouldn't be where...but when and how... We all know squids like bright lights, hangs around weeds and reef... Around the Gong, I fish around the break walls with lights at Port Kembla. The usual reef are Windang and Hill 60. There are always other anglers around. So try to find a place with less people so you can try out few retrieving techniques. I don't have any secret spot in particular. I fish depending on wind, tides and swell directions. And I fish with squid jigs. I normally out fish other angler that uses skewer on yellow tail 4:1 I uses an EGI rod. And probably cast over 200 times per session. Also I have a home made squid gaff. Allowing me to lift big squid over rock ledges. I have a collection of squid jigs. If my fav one doesn't work. I would switch to another straight away after few cast of not catching any. At the same time I don't take breaks. The whole time I there I'm always casting. So it is abit of work. Not as easy as it seems. I've been squiding alot lately, and I've caught a fair few. I think its good time now to try and catch some. Pretty sure anyone can catch a few if they arm themselves correctly... Persistence is the key .. and Good luck.. Snag-King.
