  1. Put them where you have the arrows in the pic, transducer closest in then structure outside that, you might not have needed to move them from wherever they where, they may just have been set at the wrong depth, theirs another thread on this exact thing wouldn't be very far down if you scroll through the threads
  2. That would work but it means you have to remember to isolate and de-isolate the valve every time you use the pump, you could just install a one way valve somewhere above the pump that way you never have to worry about isolating the pump and the water cant flow back
  3. Hi all, So im thinking of lining the gunwale and inwale around the back half of my boat with something a bit softer then plain old aluminium, mainly due to the inwale being pretty hard on the legs while leaning against it while fishing plastics and having something a bit softer to sit on while doing everything else, i have seen some pics around of different things but im wondering if anyone has actually done this and if so what did you use ? Thanks in advance, Rozza
  4. Hi Jay, Huge amounts of information to go through there, first things first as mentioned above make sure you have all your safety gear, know how to use it all, where it all is and how easy it would be to access if something happened, this is something that im currently re-considering with my boat. As for weather and swell, in all honesty everyone will have their own opinion and its not that easy to just say 1.5m swell and 15knts wind, 1.5m of swell is nothing to be honest, well for me it isnt anyway and swell period plays a massive part to this, a 1.5m swell with a period of 6 seconds will be completely different to the same size one with a 12 sec period. As for wind that once again is a thing for each persons personal opinions, i fish in over 20knts commonly always seems to be dam windy down here and depending on swell direction, wind direction can also have a different effect, this will also effect my location selection and how far i might even consider going out, maybe set yourself with the low weather numbers for fishing outside till you get used to things and then change it up form their as you gain more experience. Second question is a bit easier, cant help you out on the daul battery setup as i haven't done one myself yet but the rest of the stuff should be ok as you have described and running the new cabling to terminal strips or something along those lines and using the old stuff to the components should be fine as long as its not damaged, why not run them to fused terminals that way if their is something wrong it will at least be covered by some protection for each component. As mentioned above most of the stuff to do with your boat will come from spending time in it, take your time get to know everything, don't be afraid to ask and if you have any doubts don't go, Try see if you can find someone experienced with boats to do some fishing with and learn from them, i definitely don't know everything about my boat yet and im still learning almost every time i go out, even after working on a boat for a few years, good luck and enjoy

    Algae

Hey mate, Noticed the algea when i was out on saturday off kiama as well, was also really heavy when i was in the surf at werri the other day, reefs seemed to be completely shut down didnt get a single bite after 4-5hrs of fishing so just gave up on fishing them and moved to the sand, managed to get some decent flatties though, hopefully i clears out soon. When i was younger and worked on a boat we used to find some really solid fish on the edge of the algea but bugger all in it, wonder how far up and down the coast this has spread.....

    Prop Selection

Yep am aware that this motor is designed for this, but the throttle not reving the whole way is the same no matter what motor it is, it will still rev its entire range but as you have said the gearing may be different. The problem isnt so much the reving its is the fact that it revs but doesn't accelerate the boat, if the water is nice and flat it gets going ok, but once you had a bit of chop or a bit of extra weight, it revs but doesnt accelerate very well. Thanks foghorn i might give them a ring and see what they have to say.

    Prop Selection

Dropping the motor shouldnt be needed as its a long leg motor so its down pretty low in the water currently, maybe that is having some effect on it ? I have been advised to get it raised up a few inches and intending on doing so once i can actually get it done. As for the revs flat out it is only doing around 4k, which is under revving i believe, i think i need to adjust the throttle cable though as i removed the engine cover last week and found that when the throttle lever is pushed all the way forward their is still movement available on the throttle arm on the engine. Even then though when i take off in the boat at full throttle is goes to somewhere around 3k but doesnt really accelerate quickly, just revs and slowly pics up speed.

    Prop Selection

Hi guys, So im after a bit of advice on prop selection for my boat, i have a 4.88m centre console Quintrex with a BFP60 honda on it, currently i seem to be getting a lot of prop slip while trying to take off, as in the engine revs up but just doesn't seem to be able to push me along, eventually it will get going and pushes me along fine but if im in a bit of slop it sometimes struggles to hold the speed im at. So i have done some research on the honda site but due to my engine being a powerthrust model it doesnt offer me any advice on what prop i should fit. I did go back and check the non power thrust model and it provides some options but im wondering if they would actually be suitable and if not would best be suited to my boat. The current prop fitted is a 3 prong M 13-1/4 x 7, any advice on what my options are would be greatly appreciated, im mainly after something just for general fishing use, thanks in advance Rozza
  11. Thanks for the input so far, Yeah already using a insulated neutral bar that bonds everything back to my battery neutral through a cable and my engine is wired directly back to my battery, would never use the hull as my neutral even in a car i don't really like the idea of it either would probably still run a neutral cable, i guess my thoughts are along the same lines as Ric001's hence why i asked the question, i wonder if bonding the neutral would actually cause the boat to react more with salt water ? i imagine plane frames would face many of the same problems as boat when they are flying large distances over oceans (although its not the same as being in the ocean the air still holds some salt)
  12. Hey all, Have recently re-wired my boat after finding the previous owner had done a disgraceful job of it, replaced the stainless bolt that was through my console as the neutral point with a actual neutral bar but now im left wondering though do i need to bond the hull of my boat to the neutral ?? have done a heap of reading online but to be honest never seem to be able to get a definitive answer some say yes some say no......if yes what do people use to connect the neutral to the hull to prevent galavanic reaction (ie not a stanless bolt lol) I am a sparky by trade but this is somewhat outside of my normal scope of work, anyways thanks in advance Rozza

    Motor options

Hey all, So to cut a long story short I brought a boat had it all checked over got the all clear and then last weekend went to take it out and the motor wouldn't start, anyways got it back to my mechanic he got it going but sounds like something has crapped out in the bottom end....... So my options are get it rebuilt or look at going new or possibly second hand, my mechanic has given me a ball park figure of $4k for a rebuild. So what I'm after is some opinions on what people think I should do, get a old motor rebuilt or just bite the bullet and go new or possibly hunt for a second hand motor. Oh the motor is a 1995 mercury 75hp 2 stroke and I'm thinking I have a maximum budget of somewhere round 7-8k Cheers in advance
  15. Plenty of bass in all the creeks around berry, a lot of my mates spend heaps of time in the arvos after work hunting round in those creeks, they catch bass all the up to foxhound where the steams are pretty tiny, ask around town I'm sure you'll find some info

    Live Bait Tank

Hey all have dug this thread up from the past bit just wanted some opinions, i have recently purchased myself a 5.1m Quintrex and am wondering what size tank L wise is appropriate for making myself up a live baig tank with, already have a 70l round drum that i was thinking of using filled up about 3/4 of the way but after reading some of the comments am thinking i might need to downsize a bit and get something around the 40l mark, so yeah whats people opinions ?
  17. that thing is insane for NSW congrats mate
  18. hey mate, know its a bit of a a late reply but i live in the gong and am always keen to get out and do some fishing, know my way round a boat and am happy to chip in for costs, shot me a pm if your interested
  19. Hi all, Im from the illawarra and am looking for a boat that i could possibly jump on at any point to do some fishing, have a fair bit of experience for a younger bloke, have most of my own gear and am willing to help chip in for costs and help clean up etc, so shot me a pm if anyones got a spot avaliable, work shift work so have all sorts of days off and am willing to travel anywhere in the illawarra cheers Rory
  20. El Nina has something to do with unusually warm sea surface temperature's I thought but yeah doesn't really make sense with our current water temps
  21. sad to hear about all these people that get swept in, RIP, personally i have been fishing since i was a kid off the rocks with my dad, i dont understand why people who cant swim even consider fishing off the rocks and it worries me alot, with all the stories around why dont people ever learn, i have had my fair share of near misses off the rocks but as many have said before if you take your time to watch your surroundings and know a bit about the ocean then you can stay safe, doesn't take long to look around and see whats going on it could save your life. as for life jackets personally i wouldn't wear one, never have, my theory behind it is if i have to wear a life jacket to fish whatever ledge it is im fishing i really shouldn't be there but that's just my opinion each to there own. One thing i have always been taught and has always help to keep me safe was "never turn your back on the ocean"
  22. Hey guys, Know people dont like to give away there spots but im looking for a bit of info on where i could catch some bream in the lake or the surrounds, would normally just fish off the rocks but seeing as the swell is so big and theres a perfectly good lake so close thought i would give it a go, so yeah any help would be appreciated Cheers Rozza
  23. wish i was out fishing instead of sitting here at work :(

  24. yeah they are the ones havent seen them for sale down hear for ages now, hmm might look into making some of them from some stainless bar polish them up at work. thanks for the replies will let you know how i go with them Cheers Rozza
