    Thank you to all!!!!!!

Thought about going fishing, but couldn't stop driving the boat to throw in a line!!!! (first chance i've had to take the poly for a run!!!!!! :biggrin2: ).

    Love my Poly!!

Got some cool birthday presents - Permatrim, spare fuel tank, & some fishing books!!!!!

Ahhhhhhh - best weekend i've had in ages!!

  2. BTW, I think it was his 11th budget, but who's counting :1prop:

  3. Gidday all. Can someone share some pearls of wisdom about trimming motor tilt for max speed, with a varying load location and size?

I have a 5m tinnie with forward controls/bucket seats powered by a 25, and must admitt that i really dont know any concrete info about adjusting the tilt. Its a manual operation in my case, so trial and error is not simple.

Is it as simple as keeping the leg as vertical as possible? Where should the center of mass of the boat and load be? Should it be placed such that the boat planes as close to horizontal as possible.

Dumb questions i know, but hey, im dumb!

    Cheers,

    Jon

Try going for a drive & take another person with you (take someone hefty).

get them to sit up front with you & whilst driving along (on the plane) get them to move right down the back. You should feel a difference in the boat's behaviour (steering & maybe even tyhe revs might pick up a bit). This will give you an idea of how distributing the weight will help.

Ideally you should have the motor trimmed "out" (up) as far as possible (just before it cavitates). This is easy to do with power tilt/trim, however as yours is all manual, you run the risk of cavitating in turns & you might also cavitate in rough stuff.

My skiing background says put EVERYTHING down the back (when water comses over the transom, move something froward :1prop: ) & when on the plane trim right out. This will obviously cause a few issues in your boat - 1. you may have trouble getting onto the plane (the motor may not have enought to get on the plane) and 2. the boat could end up at an uncomfortable angle to fish out of & may become unstable.

I hope i have given you something to think about in relation to solving your problem. I don't believe there is any hard & fast answer, so i thought i'd share my thoughts & let you have fun working it out (another excuse to take the boat out!!!!!).

    Cheers

  4. Hi Numbers,

Hen and Chicken Bay is a pretty good spot just about anywhere around moored boats and close to shore at high tide, poke around and I'm sure you'll find something. I'll be in Hen and Chicken at some stage mid morning I'd say.

WHERE DID YOU GET TEAM FISHRAIDER STICKERS!!!!!!!!!!!! I WANT SOME!!!! :1yikes::1yikes:

I'm in a white tinnie with a 25 Tohatsu on the back. Pic below, the stickers on my boat hide the dings and scratches from oysters and pilons!! :074: As you can see, I need to update some stickers on my boat.

If I see ya I'll be over to say G'day.

    Cheers

    David.

I think from memeory i got 'em from Boppa.

I think i have about four (of varying usefullness).

I'll make sure i have 'em with me.

  5. Howdy Raiders,

My Son Andy and I will be hitting the Parra on Friday for a lure session a couple of hours either side of the 8.30am high tide.

Not sure on what we'll get up to just yet but we'll hit the river together somewhere in the mighty tinnie.

I'm really looking forward to it actually - I love fishing with Andy and "listening to him" as he talks the leg of an iron pot!!! :074::074:

    Cheers

    David.

I'm hoping to take the new poly for her maiden voyage on the Parra on Friday.

(Blue & white - you can't miss me)

MIGHT get some fishing in, MIGHT be too busy just driving the thing!!!!????!!!!

I'll have to see if i can find somewhere that my "team fishraider" sticker will stick to on the poly!!!!!

Mottyman - can you give me a heads-up on a good lure-chucking spot????

What are you in & I'll keep my eyes out??

  6. Hi guys,

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions -- and offers to sell me boats.

My heads spinning at the moment. New boat or second hand? Ally or poly? Punt or conventional hull? Which brand of two-stroke and electric?...

But I determined to work through all this, and buy the best boat for the job.

So I've a few more questions:

    # I'm a scrooge (tightwad), and before I buy anything, I always ask "will I get most of my money back when inevitably it's time to sell?" How well do the Polycraft boats hold their resale value? How about the various alluminium boats: Quintrex, Stessl, Stacer, Ally Craft .. hold value much the same? The different brands of 25 to 30 hp two-strokes also?

    # My dinghy's unpainted, so minor accidental collisions with launching ramps, oyster racks etc which cause scratches don't bother me, as they are hard to see. With a painted aluminium hull, however, this wouldn't be the case. And if a hull's left unpainted it's also cheaper to buy? Does the painting of an alluminium hull serve any other useful purpose, other than to make a boat look better?

    Regards,

    Bob

    Bob

    Please note i have a Poly (so i'm a bit pro-poly).

Mate - I'm so much of a Scrooge i have it on my number plate!!!!!!

Resale on the Polys is a tricky one - not many for sale, but those that are selling are generally pretty close to purchase price (allways puzzles me how people try to sell stuff second-ghand for what they paid for them new!). If you buy a new poly you get a four year warranty (that has to say something for the manufacturer's confidence).

As far as the paint issue goes, i've seen too many beaut paint jobs destroyed, withthe poly you can smack-up just about anything & scratches don't stand out (colour goes right through the hull) & can be melted/sanded/polished out relatively easily (so i hear - have not had to try just yet!).

    Cheers

From my reasearch on the battery issue:

Definately go with the deep cycle for the leccy. Normal batteries will die reasonably quickly from being run flat & charged over & over (they are not designed to cope with that).

Apparently you can buy a battery that is a combination of both normal and deep cycle. I assume these would cost more, but having one battery in a little boat would provide substantial weight savings over two batteries.

I have a new boat sitting in the yard at the moment (looks like it will finally get wet next weekend) which i splurged and got the bow-mount (minn kota) leccy & deep cycle set-up. It seems to be the tried & tested method.

As for the Kmart leccy's, it would be interesting to see what power they consume in comparison to the motorguides & minn kotas (they might use more power to make the same thrust).

  8. Stumbled on a new Tv station the other week.

    "TVS"

they have been running community-based programs for a while, but now have a schedule of programs which includes a fishing show at 8pm on Fridays. I'm not a big TV watcher (i'd rather be ouside or on here), so have not managed to catch a full episode, but managed to catch the last 5 minutes a week or so ago.

Don't know who the host is, how good he is, etc.

    Worth a look.

    website:

    http://www.tvs.org.au/

I fthe show turns out to be crap, maybe we could all put together some video footage & submit our own show!!!!!!!?????? (count me out - until it comes to the "blooper" reel!!! :1prop: ).

  9. I was thinking it was some interesting information unitl i read this paragraph:

I am a South Coast angler - my son and I fish from a favourite wild beach and I hope it remains open after zoning is completed. But there is a reason I fish from the beach and not at the more popular spots on the headlands where my son and I would have a much better chance of filling the freezer. It is because many recreational fishermen are wilful litterers and/or their behaviour is antisocial.

So his interest is in filling the freezer????

He does say later in the article about the joy of fishing with his son, etc (but after the previous comment i had lost interest in his article anyway).

I think the "deposits" in the rock pools and the smashed beer bottles are probably related, but as for the rest????

I'm not a rock fisherman - my choice is by boat & i can't think the number of times i have checked a quick u-turn to pull a plastic bag, bottle, etc out of the water. It's a similar issue. Fisho's are not the only people who use our waterways & shorelines, but when these ares are polluted by vermin, who are the visible ones??? US!!!!!! so we get the blame, even though (as many have said here before me) WE are the ones cleaning up after these &*^%ers!!!!!

Maybe when i have my next collection of rubbish out of the water (my boat is due for the maiden voyage soon!!!!) I'll wrap it & post it to this twit.

    :mad3:

That's my 10 cents worth (plus GST)

  10. Just got back from the Boat show in Sydney, $18,000 worse off !

Nah, only kiddin.... am over the moon.

Am still to finalise the minor task of choosing the colour of the aluminium hull.

I'm leaning towards a Blue hull, Grey stripe down the side and grey canopy.

The missus is leaning towards the white hull, grey strip down the side and grey canopy.

She's using the excuse of a white hull having a better resale figure than the blue.

If I can shoot this theory down, I'll get my way and have the blue hull.

I just spent similar dollars on a poly & had a similar dilema.

    I decided on the blue!!!

Why: There are too many white boats out there!!!!!!!!

I don't believe blue will hinder your resale at all.

You will notice that the majority of boat accessories come in blue &/or white & most white boats i've seen about have blue canopies, covers, biminis, etc.

    Go the blue!!!!

    What did you get?????

    C'mon, we're all waiting...

    Pictures yet?????

  11. I have cruise control, but don't use it (i'd rather stay alert when i'm driving anyway).

I also have traction control, and turm it OFF anytime i'm planning on doing any darts out of side streets, particularly in the wet. Have had one bus come a bit too close to the car once (pulled out of a street on a hill, wheels slipped, traction control kicked in & cut the engine power, bus kept coming)!!!!

I find it much easier to use the right foot to control wheel slip.

Although the current car has some very sticky (& VERY expensive) rubber which makes things much safer.

  12. Starting off on the 1st of March we will be running "fish of the month" photo comp. It's just a way of showing off some of the members catches & the winning entry will be judged by the members via a poll.

Any legal sized fish taken by any legal means is elligible for entry. There will be a post made & pinned to the top of this forum to post your entry pictures. At the end of the month I will set up a poll & the members can choose the fish of the month.

Each monthly winner will be posted in the brag board section.

Sounds like a great time to start such a thing - i pick up the new boat on the weekend!!!!!

Hopefully I'll be posting pics of the new boat AND some quality fish next week!!!

  13. Telcobroker

Firstly, don't think we're trying to gang up on you here, but thought i'd share with everyone my thoughts.

I am awaiting delivery of my brand new 4.1 side console POLY!!! (So i'm obviously pro-poly).

I was looking for a v-bow punt style of boat. After looking at the various models available i obviously decided on the poly for the following reasons - FOUR YEAR warranty  , the ability to take the knocks (accidents happen), colour range, ride quality, stability (the wife thinks she doesn't like boats, so i bought the most stable one i could find) and the fact that my ego was much boosted by the fact i could get a 50hp on the back (most of the equivalent aluminium boats only go to about 30 or 40hp). Believe it or not, price was not a primary factor (even though i am an accountant!!!!!! :074: ).

As far as protection, etc goes, i ordered a bimini with it for sun protection (i have very white pasty skin - perfect for an accountant), and as far as having kids in the boat, i would rather put then in a poly than an aluminium boat of the same size - Zero sharp edges on the poly!!! (i have been out in a few tinny's & taken a few nasty knocks myself).

That's my 2 cents (plus GST)

  14. hi guys,

i rang the bank, they will approve a loan for the value of the boat, but it will still leave me highly over committed,

i am just pissed off that i let myself get sucked in by the salesman, i told him i wanted to spend, and he showed me a boat that was double the value

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Polycraft-4-55-Yama...1QQcmdZViewItem

    Sammy

Go the Poly!!!!! If you buy new - 4 year warranty!!!! (if you are short of funds, then it's great to know that you have a warranty to protect your pocket!!).

I'm waiting on a call from Ben at Yabbie to let me know my baby has arrived, so i can give the thumbs-up for both the poly AND Yabbie.

If you go down to Yabbie, $10k might just get you a 4.1 open, 30hp suzi & trailer. BRAND NEW!!!! (that means warranty on boat, motor AND trailer.

Maybe have a look at the Silverwater boat show???? (I'm sure Yabbie will be there!).

Best of luck in the hunting for the boat.
