  1. Joshagius you must have been there on a quite day, I usually fish that area on a Monday. The last time I was in that area I counted 7 trawlers working from Patonga Beach to Midddle Head, they drive me crazy. Monday 2 weeks ago there were 2 trawlers going up and down the Vines, which really got under my skin. I agree with previous comments, if you don't like them, don't buy the bait they are netting.

  2. Hi all,

I have read a lot about people using chicken strips covered in parmesan cheese as a bait for bream. My question is what type of parmesan cheese are people using? Are people using fresh parmesan or the packet stuff that you put in a shaker.

    Thanks for any advice.

  3. Well done mate,

There seem to be a few arrows around in Pittwater at the moment.

I usualy get southerns, however, last outing they were all arrows.

However, I couldn't convert them to kings, so again well done.

  4. I believe it's been around for a few years now but it's only recently that the old EPIRBS have been replaced with the newer 460.

It is a legal requirement to have on board & maritime will fine you if you don't. Quite a few people have been caught out.

Give Craig from Huetts Marine ( site sponsor) a call & he'll do you a top price on a new one.

    Cheers,

    Grant.

    Thanks heaps,

hope the Fishing Gods are good to you.

  5. An EPIRB 460Mhz is required when operating more than 2 nautical miles from shore.

    Cheers,

    Grant.

Thanks mate, It's only that I heard of another fisho being fined $250 for not having one. I was unaware of this requirement, is it new or has it been around for while?

I try to get offshore to avoid the trawler infestation in Pittwater.

  6. No Good,

I lost a worked XE-351 Falcon to scum like that many years ago.

A lot of work and money for someone to think they have the right to take it off you.

Just hope, like me, that Karma has a place in this world.

    Hope it turns up.

  7. Thanks all for your replies.

I think this guy was just having a bad day. I was not creating and waves that would damge the shore or be an issue to moored boats.

    Cheers, Stan.

  8. What is the correct description of a "no wash zone"? I went past a guy in a kayak the other day who put up more than a fuss as I passed him, however, I didn't think I was making much of a wake.

Thanks in advance for any clarification.

  9. Hi all,

Does anyone know the growth rate of a King fish? I know the legal limit has been increased to 65cm, for some reason, however, while I am catching and returning fish up to 65cm (which are still great fun) I wonder if they are being returned for a possible re-capture by myself at legal size or where do they go to grow?

Just interested, as some of these fish a couple of years ago were helping feed my family.

    Kind regards, Ian.

Consider buying a piece plastic chopping board say 2- 3 cms thick and if its only going to have the pump on it, buy some sikaflex from Bias boats and put the board on the transom where you want it. Make the sikaflex thick.

Use small stainless steel screws to attach the pump to the board.

This way you dont even drill the fibreglass to create a problem.

Also you can remove the board later by slipping a long knife or blade under it.

To be on the safe side if the sikaflex lets the board go, make sure you use a big cable tie down attached to something solid near the pump so that the pump does not fly inside the boat at the end of the cable.

I used this on my old fibreglass boat and if you make the board big enough I had my sounder and pump on the board, the other thing is that you can adjust the positions of the sounders etc without worrying about drilling into the transom.

Thanks Dave, that gives me another option.

    Much appreciated.

  11. The barrel was purchased from a company in Smithfield called REFLEX (60 litre)

The outlet is just a sink fitting available at any boating shop as for the inlet set up

I machined those up myself with a piece of 20mm conduit running down inside.

    Mugen

    Thanks Mugen,

I'm not too far from Smithfield, will have to pay Reflex a visit.

Good luck on the Kings, let us know how the bait tank goes.

    Stan.

  12. You have to careful when drilling into the transom. Drill holes can let water get to the wood core and lead to dry rot which can ruin the transom and cost thousands in repairs. Heres a way of avoiding this problem:

    http://members.toast.net/boatguy/drill.htm

Plug Method. This is highly recommended for any hole below the waterline, or in any hole that has coring material. Refering to the drawing below:

Step 1. Drill the hole a bit larger than you need. A good estimate is a minimum of 50% larger. For instance, if you need a 1/2in hole, drill a 3/4in hole. If you are going to screw a something into the hole, a larger hole is even better.

Step 2. Create a plug by sealing one end of the hole, then pour mixed epoxy into the hole - thereby creating a plug. There are many formulations of epoxy, and generally, the slower curing epoxies are stronger. If you are screwing into the hole, consider a slower epoxy. Otherwise, use a fast cure epoxy to prevent excessive dripping out of the hole.

Step 3. After a minimum of 24 hours (longer if a slow cure epoxy is used), drill the hole in the center of the plug the finished size you need. This creates an epoxy sleeve and completely protects the raw edge of the fiberglass sandwich.

Step 4. Attach the screw, bolt, or fitting with bedding compound by using the Bedding Method described earlier.

Thanks mate, much appreciated. Glad I asked.

  13. When mounting items to fiberglass, is the process the same as mounting to timber? i.e. pilot hole then stainless self taper screw (with silicone) or are there any special tricks?

I am wanting to mount a bilge pump with a water pickup for a live bait tank.

    Thanks for any advice.

    Stan.
