  1. Hi Boofhead, No offence taken, I am so new to this fishing caper, Just trying to get my head around it. and get as much info from the forums as possible (been reading a lot) Ask me anything about motors and cars and I could bore you all year long, but fishing is new to me and I will be the first to admit that I really know nothing about it. The rod looks like a baitcast rod (compared to rods I have seen) as it has the little finger grip on it underneath and the reel mount on the opposite side (top), along with smaller guides which also run along the top which is why I was asking about baitcaster reels. (like I say I dont know much about fishing though) Cheers & Thanks for the info Ben
  2. Hi Jewgaffer, Thanks for the advice. I will pop down to the shop later with information in hand. Cheers Ben
  3. Hey Guys, I wanted to get a second rod for bigger fish 5-10kg and a shorter rod for use off a boat etc. I am not sure if this is a good rod or otherwise but it fitted my needs and at a clearence price of $10.00 I thought I better grab it. Rod Details below: Abu Garcia Muscle Tip Pieces: 1 Model No: MT561SWM Length: 5'6" Line Class: 6-10kg Anyone know of a cheap but ok Baitcast reel that would be good to learn on? I heard the bait cast rods are harder to use? Cheers Ben
  4. Hi Pete, I will head down to my local BCF and find out if they know what baitfish are in there, I am sure they will know what the most freshwater plastics and lures they have sold a lot of too. I dont get to see many fishermen/women at Ben chifley as they all have boats and a long way from where I am standing (on the shore). Hopefully the weather is good this weekend and I can go out for a days fishing. I tried using smaller jig heads but I find I need the larger jig heads to cast out beyond the weed, I realise there is fish in the weed too but I spent a fair amount of time removing slime/algae from the the lure. Thanks for the information, I was picking all the bright coloured lures/plastics (nuclear chicken anyone, got those more for flatties though) but that might be where my problem is. Cheers Ben
  5. Thanks guys. I will PM him now. We got a house on the beach so an early start won't be a problem.
  6. old thread but thanks for the info. I might need to buy a 2nd rod/reel combo Cheers
  7. Anyone fishing in or around Avoca over the week of the 28th Feb - 6th March wanting company of a newbie fisherman (I will make anyone look good) whether by boat or bank, it does not matter I am keen to fish and learn. Cheers Ben
  8. Hi there. I am fishing at Ben Chifley Dam and really only have saltwater type soft plastics and want to know some good options to catch some fish lol. I did catch a tiny (15cm) red fin on a 65mm powerbait minnow (hot pink) but I think these are less than ideal. as it was one fish and the trout didn't even care about it when I had it right infront of its mouth. PS: I am new to the whole fishing thing, so be gentle. Cheers Ben
  9. Thanks for the info on the flattys, I will use this when up at Avoca, fishing the estuary
  10. Great Pics. I am heading up to Avoca soon (28th Feb - 6th March) should be fun. Cheers
  11. I just bought a cheap set of Aerial polorised sunnies for $30 and without them I was looking at a reflection and with them on I was able to see the fish sitting under the water, didn't help me catch them with a net though lol
  12. Awesome stuff. Thanks for the link
  13. Unfortunately Ben Chifley has a lot of thick weed by its banks and unless you can cast in far enough it seems thats all you'll catch. I am thinking about buying a boat but I will see how I go. Apparently the Red Fin bite like a weed snag too so I have been treating all snags as a possible bite lol. There was a 35cm rainbow trout swimming right near the shore line but no matter how many times I tried to net it kept getting away (came back a few times though so that was a bit of fun) Cheers Ben
  14. Hey guys, Just to give a bit of back story, I think most of my lures and soft plastics are more for the saltwater but I thought I would go out to Ben Chifley dam and test out my gear and get into the swing of casting etc. as I am going up to Avoca in a oouple of weeks. Ok well an hour in I got a bite and she pulled hard as the fish was taking all my line and then I worked out how to actually use the drag and put some resistance on the line and then started to reel in what must be something big. anyways after a whole 30 seconds I land the biggest fish I have ever caught. Anyways glad to have shared the experience. Cheers Ben
  15. Hey Guys, I am going on a holiday with the family up to Avoca and am taking all my brand new fishing gear to have a fish as well. I am very new to fishing and if anyone wants to go fishing while I am up there and is in the area, PM me and we will tee it up. I could use the advice and company too. Cheers Ben
