    Seasickness

I don't get seasick thank God but a few of my mates do. I read recently that basically you're either wired to be affected or you're not. Apparently people who get seasick do so because their vestibular organs (in the ears, responsible for balance) are a little faulty and can't reconcile the movement of the boat with the movement of the horizon i.e. balance system just gets confused. Aside for the drugs and acupuncture remedies, apparently staring at a fixed object close to the horizon (e.g. a lighthouse or mountain) helps the brain overcome the confusion by providing a reference point. Anybody have any further thoughts on this? Hope this helps, if not your non-seasick mates will probably be thanking you for the berley... just don't heave in the boat! Cheers Josh
  5. Mate, Just to add one thing to the wise words already said... you'll never get line twist on an Alvey if the closest piece of terminal tackle to the rod is a swivel OF THE RIGHT SIZE. A lot of people use swivels that are larger than they need, therefore the swivel won't turn and you might as well not use one. I almost gave up on Alveys before I was taught this, now I use the lightest swivel possible and have never had a twist again. Cheers, Josh
  6. Gday Bob Best beach outfit for jew that I've used is a 12ft 8-wrap Snyder Glas with low mount and Alvey (I fish 25lb line on this). Old-school but effective, and it's kinda fun to listen to my mates bag me then stress about the sand getting into their high-tech gear. An Alvey'll outcast any eggbeater or overhead in my experience. I dunno about using braid in the surf... not for the tangles, but because the stretch in the mono helps when you're bringing a fish through the break. Re: the right casting distance... there is no consistent right difference, you just have to check your spot out before it gets dark and look for the gutters ands channels. If they're out deep, cast deep; if they're in close then there's no need for a long cast. Cheers Josh
  7. the simplest (worthwhile) livie tank i've tried was just to get a plastic storage container with an airtight lid(the ones your wife loves to fill the cupboards with) from k-mart, plus a cheap battery-operated air pump (some of them run off a 12V battery as well as C or D-size). i drilled a hole through the lid and stuck the hose from the pump into the water. total cost is about $25, works well enough in a tinnie
  8. G'day kevvie, smoking tailor is the best way i've found to eat it, but it's not really like smoked trout which i think is cold-smoked. It's more like baked fish with a smoky flavour. Hickory chips give the best flavour that i've tried, you can get them at any bbq shop.
  9. mick, how do you do cajun blackened fish?
  10. Mate, Just make sure you bleed tailor as soon as you catch them, get them on ice ASAP and eat them as fresh as you can. They're great if you treat them right after they're caught. They turn to mush when you freeze them so don't bother. Cheers, Josh
  11. Only discovered this site today and I'm a bit embarrassed about posting a report after reading some of yours! My mate and I fished the Pines at Narrabeen on Saturday night, bloody windy but there were stacks of good tailor around and I took home a couple of 50cm models plus a trevally. Funny thing was they wouldn't touch the rod I had set up for tailor, they'd only go for the big bait I had out in hopes of a jewie. No jewies of course. Tailor were good eating smoked on the weber last night though. Bring on the weekend! Good luck to all. Cheers, Josh
