Hey raiders, been up in port for about a month, and have another couple left with work. Has anyone been getting much up here lately? i have been off the walls, north and south, as well as in the estuary with some good bream and a flatty all on mullet fillets. havent had anything touch my live ones tho. I have been through pretty much all the old posts, re port, and I really want to crack my first Jew up here. Just wondering if they have been on the chew, or is it my tactics of live mullet that are getting me? I am fishing either side of the top of the tide, at night. Think i might hit the beach with some worms if i can get some next chance i get Any hints or info would be appreciated, or atleast whether anyone is actually catching much or not? Cheers Dave

They are hard to get on the chew, but once they are feeding you should get them in too easy, try spending a little more time burleying them up with bread, i only use the freshest white bread, as i have found they arent into the multi grain, unhealthy little buggers! as for hook, i use the small green ones rather than the longshanks and get a good hook up rate. and as far as i know cast nets are illegal in NSW, it also takes the fun out of it. Mullet are great fun on light gear!

Yeah took me a little bit to understand the mullet sizings, they are a bit ambiguous on first reading. Used to throw some smaller models about 10cm out live but never had any luck so now i have gone on the premise of "go big or go home" as i want a BIG jew. I am curious as to the reason for the sizings if you knew? is it to do with breading size or something similar? thanks

Hey there raiders. Would just like some opinions on using mullet off the beach and your preferred style. i am chasing jews, tailor, salmon and or any sharks that want a nibble. I have an alvey set up and am based on the northern beaches I usually either run them live with a single hook through the back on a running sinker rig, or snelled double hook for either butterfly or slab. I havent had much success with mullet as of yet but would really like to catch something using them. Not sure why i want to catch a big fish using mullet but, i do!! I feel that berley is pretty important with them live as they dont seem to have much scent, Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers Dave

Hey raiders, went off north curly last night with some live mullet and a salmon head, Thought i might try my luck at some big fellas. Got out around 9pm and chucked them both out. There was a small channel and gutter not far from the lagoon entrance and the wind had died down so it was a good night. Burlied up all night but didnt even get a touch. Ended up butterflying the mullet to try and tempt something but still no nibbles. Fished to the high tide then packed it up at 12. Was a really good night even tho i didnt get any fish, managed to see 5 separate shooting stars which was pretty nice. so all in all a win! Dave

Hey mate, with squid, if you dont rig it perfectly they spin, even strips. You have to pin it directly in the centre as close to the end of the strip or cone as you can , always check on the surface before you drop it down. Spinning squids dont catch fish, dave

hey mate, sucks about the phone, but what was on the rod?? happy to hear its working again, but if it was in salt water you might want to take it apart and clean it with some distilled water to remove any residual salt. they also say to put it in a bag of rice in a zip lock bag to remove any moisture. as for taking them apart, there are a few websites that send out kits, relatively cheaply, with the tools necessary, cant quite remember the name tho, hope it continues to work for you dave

Hey mate cheers for the info, checked the line around the hooks each time, but there was no abrasion. I didnt even think of bream, but when ever i have got bream off the beach they usually smash it a few times. will have to get out there again and see if i can catch some more!!

Hey raiders, heading out to narrabeen beach this arvo, was a bit of a spontaneous fish so i wasnt that prepared but had some pillies in the freezer. got there around 7ish with a fair few birds sitting on the water i thought there was a good chance of some salmon or tailer. Second cast with a ganged pillie and BOOM straight into a good sized salmon. He didnt fight too well, only pulling one jump out in the wash, but for his length he was quite thick. He was slabbed straight away and I managed about 8 good sized strips out of him, the gangs were cut off and on went a two hook snell rig. It wasnt long before the rod buckles over and, i thought to myself that this could finally be my first jew but unfortunately all i could feel was dead weight. I managed to hawl it in and i had caught a rather large specimen of the fabled weed fish!! back out it goes with another fillet, and not long after i pull in a small shovelnose shark followed by another. The next two bites i got were interesting and anyone that could shed light on what it was would be much appreciated. they were a big tug, but with no run. When i pulled in the bait the fillet had been split in two with one big bite right between the two hooks, i have read that Jewies grab a bait in the middle but i thought that this was only with whole fish baits???? After shorting the gap between the two hooks i pulled in another 4 rays and shovel nose sharks. All in all was a good nights fishing

Hey raiders, heading up to macmasters beach this weekend for a few days, and keen to do some fishing up there. I will be taking up some pilli's, fresh mullet, slimies and some beach worms. Just keen to get into a few fish tailor, salmon whiting., taking a couple of rods. Does anyone know how the fishing has been? and i wouldnt mind having a crack for a jew while i am up there. i have my techniques down pat but havent lucked into one yet, is it worth chucking out a big bait? I have been through all of the old forum posts, and countless pages on google but there isnt much said about macmasters itself, just the places around, so any extra info would be much appreciated. Also i will have an inexperienced fisher girl with me which will limit the range of my travels, Thanks again Dave

Hey mate, squidding is hard in the harbour, i use the smallest jigs i can and i only use yozuri, also if you dont get a hit after say 4-5 casts keep moving, if they are there they will jump onto it if not you will have to find them. But in saying that its alot easier moving around via a boat. keep at it mate, i remember jigging for hours to come home with nothing then other days where i have pulled in 3 or 4 in the first 10 minutes good luck P.S. watch out for the ink when you get into them, they can shoot surprisingly far out of water!! i learnt the hard way Dave

Hey raiders, heading up to stockton beach for the weekend with a few mates, and there wont be much else to do but fish which suits me!! I will be targeting Jews mainly but will also have some gear for whiting and a rod to hopefully spin up some tailor and salmon. Has anyone heard much recently from that way or have any tips? I will be catching fresh mullet before i go and try to get some beach worms up there for bait. Cheers Dave

Hey mate, with squid the bigger the better, a king will demolish a squid!! yakkas i wouldn't worry about size as much either. and i have never used bonnito but kings will smash them as well. hope this helps Dave
