  1. I have the same rod matched with a stradic c14 2500 excellent set up even thinking of using the rod for soft plastic jew fishing rated at 3-6kg plenty of power.

  2. Great catch.

Good to learn whiting can be caught in winter.

From my experience fishing for them off the beaches they are available till about July then the water temperatures start dipping and the season is over till about October through to the Autumn months.Nice catch by the way one of my spots can be hit and miss at times.Fishes best with a bit of a bump.

  3. Good going Royce and Trevor. Didnt think you would make it out of there have fished there many times years ago .Have you tried the steep descent at Garawarra farm on past occasions now that's a test of fitness. Have seen horses going back up that track gasping for breath the garie track is a piece of cake.Where you fishing the first ledge or the Figure Eights which is the Second major ledge past the beach. Well done .Steve.

  4. Hi Raiders. I currently have a light soft plastics rod pfluger trion 2-4kg spooled up with 6 pound braid for flathead and bream. Recently purchased a shimano sephia squid rod 8 foot 6 rated at 3-6kg this rod can throw up 30 grams of lead no worries. Have already caught a few green eyes with it using 6 kg mono line straight through .My question is can I use this rod for soft plastic fishing for Jew if I run 6kg line through it.Seems to have plenty of power. I know everyone uses braid for soft plastics for sensitivity casting distance etc but what about using say 6kg mono thin diameter attached to say 20 pound leader via the usual knots allbright or surgeon loop.this would be more cost effective than using braid. I know most people would not even dream of using mono however in my squid fishing I catch just as many squid as the braid brigade so I am thinking along the same lines for general fishing .Any opinions would be appreciated.Cheers Steve.

  5. Nice fish. Are you fishing the bottom there? Or burley up the wash and fish floaters?

By the looks of the photo looks like a paternoster rig sinker to the left of the photo. I would say he was fishing Mistral Point which is a high ledge snapper spot very reefy hence the need for this rig,

  6. Hi raiders,

For the past few weeks I've been trying to catch a Jew (landbased) around the northern beaches I've tried Clifton gardens, and palm beach wharf with no luck, only banjo sharks, large pike and bonito. I've been using live squid with 2 snelled 5/0 hooks. Does anyone know any good spots anywhere near the northern beaches. Any rigs, baits and general tips would be much appreciated. Thankyou so much.

    Mr. Fish

Hey mr fish time to thank alberto on his choice of spots. I have sent you a PM hope you got it.

  7. I could not tell you as I have never used braid. If the jewies are hungry, I don't think it would matter. Most fishos tie on a piece of mono to the braid to attach their hooks. As I also fish handlines , I don't use braid, and I don't use sinkers in Port Hacking fishing the deeper water.

Jewies are usually hungry feeders and eat whatever they fancy, so long as it fits into their large mouth.

Great catch yowie. I have observed in all your reports that you don't use any lead how does the rig get to the bottom if there is tidal run ,currents. I would be interested if you could describe your rigs line class, hook sizes.

    Cheers Steve

  8. Well done mate...just wanna know which rig n bait did u use if u dont mind...thank u very much

The rig I used on this occasion is a running ball sinker lumo bead then swivel and most importantly a short trace around 12 to18 inches max.this is to minimise tangles around the line.12 pound mono. The other rig I use is the paternoster rig bomb sinker and 2 droppers 1st one about a metre up the line and second one around the same distance apart. Length of dropper around 6 inches. As I am using an Alvey dont forget the swivel above the trace to avoid line twist. I find both rigs work really well the latter is good if there is a lot of surge and movement in the sea. Hope this helps.

  9. Hi Raiders. Upon recommendation from a good friend who goes fishing practically all the time and is in the know he suggested that I try one of the more remote northern beaches on Tuesday afternoon frequented hardly by any anglers and from his past results there I thought I should give it a go. Using live beachworms I arrived there around 2.00pm high tide was around 6.00pm and found a suitable gutter. Not a soul to be seen except for a few surfers and the locals going for their walks. The swell was a solid metre that's how I like it from past experience if it is too flat all you get is rays and pest fish.. I was only using about half an ounce of lead as I like to have the bait move around and as there was not too much drift it was the perfect arrangement.

Now back to the fishing lets just say I was not disappointed and this outing was one of the best I have had for a long time. First cast if the day produced a bream of around 29cm good start for the day. Second cast produced a flathead of around 39cm great I thought. Maybe I will get my hat trick next cast well I was right up comes up a nice whiting. Didn't want to jinx myself so I went back to my bag and sat down and had a sandwich. Went back to fishing the time was now around 3.00pm and no hits for an hour. I persevered and from 4.00pm and beyond the fish came on with a vengeance with fish biting freely till around 9.00pm and finally gave it away because I had reached my bag limit for whiting. I actually caught 25 whiting so the remainder were released just as well I was using long shank hooks ,and secondly I ran out of bait which hasn't happened for a while. Its good when everything goes to plan for a change. It makes you forget the donut days .Cheers Steve.

  10. I am no expert mate but on the occasions I have fished with Craig Magill charter operator he just hooks them through the cape on a 6/0 octopus pattern hook.Hope this helps you.

  11. Hi Raiders.I took advantage of the great weather yesterday afternoon and had a session in the lower harbour's sandy spots with a high tide around 7.00pm I thought it would be worth trying.Got there around 4.00pm and fished till 9.00pm.I was using bloodworms for bait and noticed that on numerous occasions the hooks were bitten off with no bites or movement of the rod tip.At first I thought it was tailor but came to the conclusion that it is probably crabs or toads.Anyway after losing at least 6 hooks I finally started to catch some whiting the fish only bit for a period of two hours around the top of the tide.As the water is very shallow light leaders and minimal lead is necessary as are small shank hooks to allow the fish to swallow the baits. The whiting were around the 29 to 34cm range and the bream and tarwhine were legal fish.Anyway an enjoyable afternoon with a few fish for tea.

    Cheers Steve
