  1. Yeeros i agree i myself remeber the days when my father tought me to fish and they were much simpler times... although we have to start somewhere and clifton gardens seems to be a good start.. the problem is shore based anglers by large do not have the support of the boaties because they think the bans on fishing in certain areas only extends to shoreline WRONG!! it extends well out over waterways and well into offshore areas if we do not start fighting this now we will be banned from a large area and the fun will be ruined already gone are the days where we could just show up anywhere and wet a line how much more do we want to loose honestly?? the groups formed are fine as they are but if we just sit back and expect them to solve our problems without voicing ourselves then what is their purpose?? if we are not willing to sacrifice our own time to fight for what we love then what is the point?? come on guys get behind something lets start standing together instead of being a world divided
  2. mailto:council@mosman.nsw.gov.au Theres the link to email them to voice your concern about a ban of fishing at clifton gardens.. whether your a resident to the area or not just let them know it's not a wise move
  3. Just spoke to the cr. at mossman council heading the push for chowder bay to become a marine reserve and a no take zone.. they are dead serious about this guys and they're having very limited resistance from anyone
  4. Any kind of noise! it's just the support needed there's no point if ten people say something everyone who's just viewing this and not saying anything needs to say something if they really care about their rights as anglers they need to do something!! But yeah a petition is a Great start
  5. Hey Raiders, love to sit here and tell you guys had a great fishing trip last night or something but sadly no.. writing here cause i've looked further into this band on fishing at clifton gardens (chowder bay) this is crap guys it's a bunch of idiots dictating what is right with no proof.. i've personally written a letter to the editor and have been promised it will be published as well as replying to a choice selection of mossmans residents through their opnions and have attempted to lay the story out in the open.. guys but lets face it if we dont make a stand on this and make a noise were going to loose yet another fishing spot to a "marine park" something needs to be done on this and urgently we need to start making noise on stuff like this and not just letting recfish or some other agency handle it i'm only one bloke but through work and family i've got a fair few people interested in making noise about this because it's just stupid yeah ok i hear the nay sayers in the back ground going oh but some people do make a mess!! that's no reason to sit on your hands bout it the rest of us do the right thing and just cause you have a boat and think it doesnt matter how much longer before this type of attitude starts spreading?? you'll be fishing in new zealand for a feed if it keeps up.. so come on guys who's got the stomach to make some noise on it because i for one am thoroughly sick of being portrayed as an evil person because i fish!!!!!!
  6. Fact of the matter being though guys some people down at chowder bay do leave a hell of alot of spent line and tackle lying around.. i completely disagree with the ban but it's what people will push for if people dont start cleaning up after themselves!! so please guys if you see someone just throwing crap around say something it's worth giving some bloke the shits for being asked to put his rubbish in the bin then to have to deal with these stupid proposals from councils constantly... we get victimised daily for everything were doing while fishing were cruel when we release a fish after a hard fought fight were even worse when we catch one for the table the last thing we need is being associated with rubbish left all over the shop!!
  7. Heya Raiders thanks to the top advice from you guys i ducked out for an early morning fish before work this morning and well whadya know following your advice to the letter i managed a nice 6kg grouper... only thing i didnt have was the alvey reel so i subbed that for my boat reel fixed up with 100lb line and well wasnt i in for a surprise fight didnt last overly wrong but tell ya what my poor rod knew what was happening!!!!!! thanks again for all the advice guys.. this site really is worth the price of admission the little tid bits of info are gold!!!! thanks again to everyone!! oh and again only took a couple of quick snaps and let the big fella go..
  8. Hey Raiders, just curious guys i wouldnt mind having a crack at some of those grouper that are around bluefish headland as posted in todays daily telegraph.. anything in particualr you have to do to catch them?? not even too keen on keeping one just want a snap for the album
  9. Got every fisho who works for DHL to vote to keep it.. that's alot of votes!!!
  10. Hey Raiders, taking my two young nephews fishing tonight and they're both really keen to catch some squid fun for them and baith for me ha ha ha, just curious where should i be heading?? keep it fairly local too guys as theyre only young 4 and 6 so i dont wanna drag em too far
  11. Thanks heaps to everyone thgat has taken the time to reply back to this, my simple answer for why sharks?? well the answer is purely simple barring becomming a maniac and spear fishing for them or hunting lions in africa i cannot put forward a better way to pin myself against a superb predator they completely fascinate me and they present themselves with such a dogged determined mind, having caught and sometimes released there blue water friends i really wanna target them without the help of a boat or anything else this may all sound dillusional and weird but i've done the metre plus jewie and caught kingies admittedly they fight awesome they compare nothing to one of those huge predators.. and as you stated they taste great too...
  12. Only heading for the landbased ones as i've done the whole berlying up and settling in from a boat to land the big guys in retrospect to this that was easy it was just a waiting game the landbased sharks seem to be more clued in to whats going on, im just begining to be frustrated with the whole thing i've never targeted a species as i have and been left begging after every trip.. all im asking anyone and everyone for is as much help and advice as any one can cough up i keep wondering if theres some kind of all mighty secret spot that someone knows of where i can go without having to travel 5 hours to get to it.. i just wanna know a frequented spot thats someone has caught from recently so i can go and join in the fun i dunno how much more of an ego bashing i can take...
  13. Ok raiders im asking for every tiny little pinch of advice i can locate here.. im fishing for sharks being landbased.. anything you guys can give me is greatly appreciated im asking for sightings previous catches the entire lot, any locations you can give me that have a higher than normal concentration of these great sportfish is greatly appreciated my gear is well suited to the job although only rays seem to be gettin attracted beach fishing is getting out of the question in the colder months and rougher seas.. so any bays inlets estuarys or hot spots any of you know of or have heard of is mychly appreciated at current im obbsessed!! the've eluded me for the better part of a month no matter what i try and its really getting to the ego!! i've heard gordons bay holds a high concentration is this true?? im near snapping point this is the crown jewel for me at the moment and i will not be content till i have one in the album or on the plate!! please raiders help a man in desperate search!!!!
  14. Hey raiders just thought i'd give you a heads up of what happened while fishing long reef beach friday night, nothing spectacular at all 3 metre plus port jasksons and one 50-60 kilo ray.. although i am quite glad i caught the ray as it did give me a chance to test out my new tackle all in all i was disappointed.. fished from early evening till early morning without so much as a hint of something plate worthy although all the conditions seemed right tried a bunch of areas up and down the beach with lots of tackle changes and critiques nothing could entice the big players out to play.. even with 2 bucket loads of fine berley being introduced.. perhaps i will steer clear of there for future reference and stick with mona vale and narrabeen as they have produced better results in worse conditions... if anyone knows any tips to the area give me a heads up as although it did produce in a way i was thoroughly disappointed..
  15. Hey raiders i'm heading to long reef beach on friday night for an allnight session... as im specifically tagerting school sharks and possily the occasional jewie would like to heard from the guys that are fimiliar with the area any good parts of the beach?? best rig up to use what bait as i dont get out ther till after sunset becaue of work i have a real ahrd time looking for the gutters just need some kind of heads up from you more experinced guys... just lemme know what you think and any tips are grettly appreciated..
  16. Hey raiders, ok i'm looking for some help here guys i really want to land myself some school sharks of the beach or wherever, although they're proving very illusive to me at the moment can anyone please give me some locations times of day etc. i've got the gear ive got the time im just asking some of you more experienced fisho's for some helpful adivice on the subject
  17. Cheering the missus actually wants to go back to mona vale tonight!!!! seems i wasnt the only one gutted by that huge bust off!! she's keen to get a look at whatever is that big in that area ha ha ha.. hopefully tonight no bust offs
  18. Mate stripped it and left me standing there like a stunned mullet.. have no idea what it was but judgin what happened with the jewie it had to be a shark and the way it stripped it i'd say it wasn't a regular schoolie, although in hindsight it could have been a large ray as they have the speed and power to strip line like nothing.. yeah i dont brag about the jewies but yeah i've had a fair amount of luck and the funniest thing is not once have i ever set out to catch one but they still keep coming.. and the way the rig works is you present two slightly smaller baits at the same time thus doubling your chances of hook ups but also the free flowing smaller hook once something runs away from you generally jags in the fishes gill or back area depending on the length of your trace with the two hooks in it greatly reduces the chance of loosing your fish.. plus with the two different sized hooks if something smaller comes along you will generally hook it up if it's keen enough.. yes sometimes the rig has it's flaws but in all it has worked for me in the past, whether it works for others well thats a different story.. hope that helps a little there mate.
  19. Hey, got out to mona vale last night didnt't do too bad but the sharks illuded me completely, managed one flatty that would have only been around the 50cm range and didnt even know i had it till it hit the beach ha ha!! the as quickly as i had released that and re-baited my rig while i was actually in the middle of berleying up something hit my rod with a vengance bent my 12 footer like a tooth pick and stripped 250m of 50lb line in about 30 seconds against near maximum drag completely spooled me!! so that was heart breaking and after a few moments of self hate re-spooled the line and went at it again at the begining of the run-in hit a decent jewfish ranking up in the low 80's but after already having a freezer full of them a photo release was the go there.. after that a couple of inquistive bites but that was it, my old trusty rig still works the same on the beach as it does on a boat.. 1m 100lb trace with a size 7/0 free running octopus hook then a fixed size 9/0 octopus hook with slimey fillet as bait all in all for beach fishing for me it was pretty eventful but we were just fishing not to far from the hospital there now hearing that the area near the rocks has produced for you in the past maybe tommorrow arvo/night is the go for me there.. as i said guys keep anything and everything coming as im really teething to land my first shark from land...
  20. Thank you, i released her on the basis that she was just too goregeous to kill , she put up a top fight and did not disappoint, it's a natural thing to do release the big females so theres more of them in the future , needless to say i have nothing against ppl who may keep one of that size if its their first or so on but again my personal stretch is to let her go the smaller males of the species taste better anyway.. and well hopefully after someone reading this fisheries would go down there and look at the disgustingly small fish some of the so called anglers are keeping..
  21. Thanks you im actually heading to mona vale tonight hopefully the fishing gods are being kind tonight ha ha your a lucky bloke i can go months without even getting a bite off from a shark , i know this sounds nuts but i seem to be the lucky guy in the jewie department although im still yet to get hooked by a monster, see all previous shark fishing i have done was on a boat as i've grown tired of boat fishing and trying to bring my passion back for hunting out spots on foot and persevering with all the little troubles us land based anglers deal with, i'm a freshwater fisherman at heart but i've done about all i can do there bass, carp, cod, yellow belly, catfish, red fin, trout you name it and i want to keep the challenge up to myself i have a hit list of sorts that i want to target and well school sharks are my new challenge so any and all help is greatly appreciated!! Great fish by the way what time of day was that?? and wait till you hook one of that guys big cousins you'll know it they'll put any kingfish to shame in the fight department..
  22. Yeah mate i actually catch most of mine at night you gotta be patient though they're not as gun ho then but i generally find the flatty's at night are a fair bit larger, im the opposite from you during the day i cant seem to hook a decent one no matter what tricks i try, just as a general rule for myself no matter where i go prawns are the go for flatty's and generally your standard running ball sinker rig is the easiest , just standard size 3 ball sinkers and size 2/0 baitholders does the trick although a heavier leader is useful as the bigger they get the more there mouth chews through line like a hacksaw hope thats some kind of help to you.
  23. Thanks to all of you who are helping me out on this, i really just wanna get amongst the toothy critter action they fight like hell and taste like heaven , i'll definately be out amongst it tonight i'll try my tail off to jag one, any more info from you more experienced fella's would be greatly appreciated.. just as a heads up too to all you guys targeting jewies in around huntleys point wharf on the top of the tide with live squid baits is pretty successful although most i've pulled from there are in the low 70cm range but needless to say still doesnt mean they're arn't monsters to be had there although i don't know if i reccomend eating to many from there myself personally a photo and thats it for me either there or recently i've had great fights from akuna bay area producing school jews still a jew all the same.. as i said guys any tips hints or whatever to target the school sharks would be greatly appreciated and i'll help out any way i can with whatever i've encountered.. cheers guys again and keep them coming Brett,
  24. Thanks mike greatly apprerciate it might head up there tonight then, hopefully something will pop up.. i'm still one of those blokes who loves a fresh fillet of shark,
  25. Hey Raiders, sorry it's a day late but flat out at work, Tuesday night me and the missus headed to chowder bay in clifton gardens to give it a go having seen the reports of the general area, well we were not disappointed first cast in delivered a highly energetic bream of the high 30's category so we were off to a good start, next up was the missus with a very weighty and rather lazy flatty ranking up 53cm but was much heavier than a normal fish of that size.. probably been havin a good feed on all the squid in the area. another few small snapper came to have a nibble but they were promptly thrown back (UNLIKE A COUPLE OF OTHER ANGLERS ON THE WHARF!!!) then without warning my rod completely buckled and started to scream like a banshee after a decent fight which saw a few choice words fly from my mouth after trying to dodge the pilons and land the fish i was exstatic to measure this flatty up and have it reach a whopping 81cm my largest to date by far after a quick couple of snapshots that big girl swam away as you'd be pleased to read, last fish of the night was another very fat flatty which came into measure 61cm, all in all we had a top night even though we were in bed by 12 it was a good night fishing, also the big bream before mentioned was thrown back aswell and swam away quite ok seeing as how we already had a feed from the two flatty's.. the bait we used was hawkesbury prawns on a running sinker rig (although i would reccomend a paternoster) we also fished at the run in of the tide.. also raiders i have been absolutely hankering to eat some fresh shark lately i know this is an odd request but i would really love some help on this fact keeping in mind im a shore based angler without access to a boat.. any help on this would be muchly appreciated..
