  1. Spent the weekend camping on a high-country river just out of Tumut.

Beautiful spot. The water was charging through the system with all the recent rain/floods so I thought my chances of success were low.

Got up early one morning and threw a little rainbow trout style shallow diving lure for about an hour.

To my great delight I caught 2 x rainbows and 1 x brown in the hour session. Great little fighters that absolutely smashed the lure on light gear, plenty of acrobatics involved too.

The brown was delicious on the fire that night with some salt and butter. The little rainbows swam off the fight another day.

I think I feel a freshwater fishing bug coming on after a successful first adventure!

To add to the serenity of the scene I had a cheeky platypus playing in the river in front of me... gotta love the high country!

  2. I am working the evening shift today  so thought 'why not get up early for a fish'. So glad I did.

Hit Wanda beach just before 5am and set myself up straight out from the car park. I only had a twice frozen bag of pillies for bait so wasn't expecting to much. Wasn't much action, just a couple of small nibbles that felt like tailor, until 6.45am. As I was backing of my drag to put my rod in its holder so I could have a cup of hot chocolate I felt the strangest 'bounce' on my line. Having never caught a Mulloway before I wasn't real sure what it was. I have never had anything on my line that that fought like this. Anyway I was soon rewarded with my first ever Mulloway, coming in at 60cm on the dot. Not huge I know but still very exciting.

I had only just finished SMSing a couple of mates (who were not to pleased at 7am :ranting2: ) when I got a now familiar bounce on my line and pulled in my second slightly smaller model that I let go.

I might have to ask the boss if I can work more evening shifts.

Great work matey! I caught my first Jew in the same spot only a few months back (also using a dirty old pillie).. It is pretty exciting when you get the torch out and realise that it isn't just another salmon!

  3. Nice work! I hooked a blue swimmer through the claw on the georges near (Captain Cook Bridge) yesterday.. I was certainly surprised to see it come floating up .. dead weight on the line, thought maybe it was going to be a confused squid!

    Hey Trung,

    You done it again !

I think that if you eat another crab, you're gonna start crawling sideways !

Well done, you'll have donuts and crabs for dinner ! :074:

Well OK - not the right kind of donuts...

I realised what I have been doing wrong with my crabbing all this time....

Bream frames for bait every time. I get a heap of bream so I thought they would work OK on the crabs, but you have stated they don't work for you...

Next time, I think I will use the whiting frames....or maybe some yakkas....

  4. Spent the morning cruising around Port Hacking. Started near the moored boats in Gunnamatta Bay searching for bait fish - without too much luck.. my berley kept attracting the attention of those pesky pinkies!

Had a quick drift of Jibbon Beach but the swell was up a little too much for the liking of my 13 ft tinny! Made the decison to head for flat water and pulled up deep off Lilli Pilli.

Landed a few snapper (just under) that put up a fun fight on light gear. Saw a few sizeable schools of something on the sounder that kept my hopes up from time to time :)

It was when pulling the boat out at Swallow Rock that I saw this specimen and thought shame shame shame.. both a shame that I didn't get to catch it.. and a shame that whoever did catch it didn't return this monster to breed another day.

Note: My foot is size 12.. this was a true monster flatty. Apologies for the poor photo, dodgey old phone camera!

  5. After 2 weekends of rain, i promised some guys from work that i would finally take them down to the hacking for a fish. When we got to the river, i couldnt believe how brown the water is after all the rain we have had. Usually the water in the hacking is clear enough to see the bottom in some areas... With the water temperature hovering around 14 degrees i warned the guys that today might not be a good one. Headed to yowie bay and started fishing. Immediately, to my surprise the fishing was on straight on. Landed seven keeper trevally, 2 watsons leaping bonitos, two gunards, a flathead and a blue swimmer crab. Hooked up and landed a king fish on pillie that went just on legal. The wind picked up so we went over to the moored boats to get some shelter. There were plenty of bait fish about, and my mate had a yellow tail he had hooked up chased by a large king fish right up to the surface. We has a number of big hits on slimely mackeral strips but no hook ups. All in all a pretty good day.

All fish were caught on pilchards.

brilliant little session! how much water were you fishing in?

  6. Had a quick go off the jetty at Gunnamatta Bay yesterday arvo.. saw a few squid caught there, none by me unfortunately..

Then had a bit of fish with peeled prawns and also ganged pilchards..

The result - a couple of chopper tailor.. the biggest probably about 35cm, put up a nice fight and jumped a few times out of the water.. fun for a little guy.. nice relaxing afternoon and scratched some of the fishing itch that had been building during the rainy days!

  7. Braved the wind this afternoon and fished Port Hacking - just in the mouth of the South West Arm.. only had a couple of hours but really struck out... Using prawns, pilchards and a healthy bunch of berley I caught nothing but an endless supply of 10-25cm snapper.. urhg.. help!

I'm sure there must be better to be had!

  8. Hi Champ, what are fishing for? whiting is near Bundeena sand flats, squid & yellowtail just on the heads and nice fishing in front of the National park with your yellowtail and Squid, also Bonito still around, plenty of Tailor. one of the rivers across from Lillie pillie hold nice Bream as well.

    and flathead in baitbay.

Im sure peter s can add to this

    cheers

    thanks bud

  9. Gday raiders. heading up the hawkesbury next week with a few mates to have a crack at some jew. Been looking forward to this trip for some time now. Planned it according to the moon & after this rain, everything should be perfect.

Does anyone know if it's been firing lately? We dont fish the hawkesbury often as our local is botany bay & hacking.

Will keep u posted on how we go when we return.

Got any tips on the hacking, I'm a beach fisher in the area but have got my hands on a boat for the weekend.. looking for some good action!

  10. WOW :1yikes:

Was this actually inside the basin? I have seen photos of reds being caught many years ago but this is a very good indication that they might be starting to make a comeback. Great catch of reds in the basin!

Yep, in the basin! I was mighty surprised to get two nice fish like that. Just plonked the boat straight out in the middle and got burleying.. pretty happy with the results! The locals seem to think there are some reds about in there. Apparently numbers are building since the cessation of commerical fishing.

  11. Took a relaxing drive down the south coast on Saturday and decided to have a little fish out on St Georges Basin.

The southerly was up a little and I wasn't expecting much. Arrive at the spot around 3pm and started to burley up. Sat around for an hour and not even a touch on the pillies. It was then the baits started disappearing, I figured the baitfish were starting to move in on the burley, hopefully the food chain was building!

About half an hour later. Bang bang bang! Pulled up two good reds within 15 mins (the biggest 41cm and approx 1kg). The bigger fish gave a spirited fight on the light gear. Missed another 2 very hard hits straight after landing those two. Also tagged a stray flattie.

Things then became quiet again and cruised back to shore just on sunset for a very satifying fish.

  12. What more can I say - those fish are stunners! Don't think i'll be anywhere near the blue water when i visit NZ in august but i'll certainly be plotting a summer visit while im there!

  13. Nice report Centrepin.

Plenty of helpful hints & nice pics. Thanks for sharing.

Well done on a nice bag of blackies. Looks like it's going to be a bumper season from all the early reports coming in!

    Cheers,

    Grant.

Beaut looking fish - walked from Otford to Garie and back the other weekend.. Some of the quieter rock platforms along there look great for a fish.

  14. Onya matt! Great catch.

We were fishing about 300m off Wanda and Elouera beach Saturday night till about 10pm. Very pleasant conditions with the full moon.

We could see about seven lights on the beach and wondered if anyone was catching anything.

    Cheers

    Peter
