  1. Just wondering if any other Raiders have experienced a similar problem cleaning fish.

After a nice day on the water off Cronulla yesterday, i was cleaning a snapper and thought that the fish must have had sand in its stomach contents because my hands felt very gritty. After washing my hands i found hundreds of tiny glass like spikes in my hands and fingers. They are really hard to remove being so small and numerous. Is it something the fish has eaten ?

  2. Don't get me wrong, but I can never understand the logic when it comes to realising big fish or certain species of fish. If someone catches a large snapper, no one ever asks if it was realised. Surely these large snapper are also breeders too. but for some reason, if someone catches a large flathead & keeps it there are questions asked. Myself personally,I do not keep large flathead as I find them too tough to eat, but I do keep the odd Groper which some people find alarming. What is it about certain species & sizes of fish ?

  3. I tend to agree with Mr. Squidy, the tailor around Sydney probably don't rate as well as those in Perth. The north nsw coast is far more productive if you are after large tailor & there are a few spots on the Central Coast which hold mega tailor at times.

  4. There could be lots of reasons you are not catching much. In my experience, if you have live bait or very fresh bait, fish the tides to suit your target species & use the lightest lines possible you should be onto the fish. It also helps to know the area & make sure you are fishing where the fish are. Lures are effective but you need to apply a lot of thought as to what to use for the fish you are after. It may pay to join a club or ask some more questions on this site. Good luck, it will happen.

  5. Also had a friend who has been over twice & trolled all day for zip, although they did catch a few small tuna, stripeys or bonito less than a couple of kgs average. From what he told me I don't think I would worry about it.

  6. Some very good comments to increase the size & lower bag limits. Unless we take some positive action this sport will be taken away from us.I can't understand why anyone wants to keep jew at 45 cm anyway. Same as the legal size for bream, not worth keeping. Perhaps we should put together a bag limit & legal size for all Fishraiders to adhere to & be a bit more proactive.

  7. went for a fish with a mate down at berowra last sunday (oct 17), by 11.00am we had a nice feed of fish. 1 x jewy at 22lb and 1mtr long, 1x flatty at 7.5lbs and 72cm long, 1 flatty at 62cm long and 3 x flatys from 49cm - 56cm long the catch bag weighed in at 39lbs, great feed of fish and about time as the rest of my year has been a bit quiet. the jewy took out about 150mtrs of line on his first run and then a boat tried to cross the path of my line. i quickly opened the bail arm and dropped the rod tip to the water, the boat only just missed my line (lucky). he got a few nice names shouted at him and then i got back into the fight. Once i turned the fish i got right into him keeping him heading towards me. just as we landed him the other rod went off with the big flatty, it was mayhem for about 20mins. Great day , great catch and great weather, what more can you ask for......

Nice catch, mind if I ask if you were using bait or lures.

  8. Also forgot to mention that they get bass & ep's up the top of the Woronora River near the "Needles". The bass are only small & few & far between fish. better size ep's down towards the old road bridge at the Woronora river.

  9. Hey Mick,

Not sure if your allowd to fish the fresh water side of the weir. Never heard of anybody doing it and maybe you should check with National Parks & Wildlife. I'm sure there are bass up there as they were planning on putting in a fish ladder several years ago at the weir to help there migration to the salt for spawning.

PS. Depends on what type of fishing your into. The Port, Georges River & Botany Bay are all good. Can you specify what your into.

  10. Dan,

Great effort & even better that you released the fish which were surplus to your needs. It's too that bad some of the "Do Gooders" & Greens don't read these reports as it just goes to show that fisherman in general are our greatest asset when it comes to conserving & managing fish stocks. Well done

    Cheers, Scoop
