  1. G'day All,

I catch heaps of large snapper down here at Batemans Bay and most of them look like NZ snapper, ie no large lump on their head.

When I fish up north, around Coffs I find smaller fish, say 2 to 4kg have quite large lumps on their noggins .

The ones with a small hump down here are mostly male and very healthy.

  2. A mate of mine and his experienced ex pro fisho at hathead, nearly drowned because they had lifejackets on. They were coming into the shallow launch creek at hat head in an open tinny, which during school holidays gets packed with kids in the creek. Whilst riding the back of wave into the narrow opening they had to stop due to oblivious kids swimming into their path. The following wave upturned the boat trapping them under the boat. The flotation vests pushed them up againsts the underside of the boat whilst they were still in the surge zone, preventing them from scrambling under the upturned sides. With no vests on they would have been able to squeeze under the side. They were lucky that adults then raised one side of the boat allowing them to escape. So its horses for courses. Blanket rules can also cause death and people should be able to be allowed to judge the severity of the the situation for themselves.

I also tend to agree that it can be a good revenue raising ploy.We went out several years ago for the first time out of Batemans Bay in a 6.3m walkaround custom plate. We didn't recognise it as a bar crossing as it is as "wide as Sydney heads". It was dead flat yet the local waterways bloke was parked round the corner and issued us with fines.Seriously!!! If it had of been a real bar crossing such as Narooma or Sth west Rocks I could understand. He was still parked outside,4 hrs later, still issuing fines. Obviously no time to circulate for intercepting real safety issues.

I agree , it's all about more fines coming from our communist Government.

I have worked on and under the water for most of my life and have wittnessed the death of two gentlemen whom were trapped in their sunken boat by their life jackets.

I have also been fined for no life jacket whilst wearing a full wetsuit, which needs 10 kg of lead belt to be worn to be able to dive below the surface.

  3. Thanks Andrew, I did a quick google search as the manual didnt say anything about it and there are a few forums where people suggest the port side because of torque reasons. Has anyone mounted theirs on the starboard side?

Gday Higgs, I would stick it on the starboard side in line and level with the second strake
  4. Hi Cam, soft rider pedestals are what you want and not that dear-we have fitted them to both new and secondd hand boats and they work well.

    Cheers,

    Huey.

Gday Cam, the best way to look after your back is remove the seat and stand up when under way.

  5. Gday predator check out Lazer Craft. I owned a 560 for about 7 years which I used as an abalone boat and also for fishing. They are built like a tank, the welding is perfect and they ride better than most other plate vessels. Trim tabs would make a major difference to any deep vee plate boat as they must ride level for a smooth ride. In having said that, I prefer my 19R Haines Hunter to any plate boat for perfect handling in any weather.

A shim is a thin strip of metal that , in your case , fits between the BB & the inside of the hub thereby creating a tight fit.

A word of caution , be carefull which loctite you use as some are designed that once fitted they are not removeable

Gday Brett, Make sure there is no play in your wheel bearings first, not tight though just nip the nut up on the bearing untill you can just feei movement when you hold the tyre top & bottom and wriggle it. Then use a centre punch and make 6 or so indents around the perimiter of the face of the housing that that holds the bearing buddy, so as to flare the inside face out in those positions which act as a locking tab. Regards Nick

  7. Dear fellow Fishraiders,

I have a 2004 Mercury 140hp motor that i have had since I purchased my boat new. The hull is a 5.95 Trailcraft Trailblazer plate alloy. Since new I have had continual problems with overheating. I have had the boat back to the supplier so many times that I have lost count.

I have the problems when the boat is being pushed along just fast enough to troll skirted lures, from 2000-3000 rpm. As you can imagine, this is frustrating the heck out me. If I reduce the speed to that of an idle, then the temperature returns to below 1/4, otherwise the temperature rises to above 3/4 and nears the red section of the temperature gauge. The response that I get from the supplier and another mechanic is that the temperature, when checked by laser gauge, is at an acceptable level. The second mechanic hasn't been able to wet test the motor to put the motor under load and therefore cant test it appropriately.

Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

    Regards,

    Wes
